MacArthur Genius Grant to Simon, McKellan Fights for Brit Acting Stature

    - The MacArthur Foundation's annual list of scientists, scholars, musicians and artists to receive $500,000 "genius" grants includes David Simon, the co-creator/writer/producer behind The Wire, Treme, Homicide: Life on the Streets [pictured with The Wire star Dominic West]. The Foundation says Simon's latest work on Treme explores "the constraints that poverty, corruption and broken social systems place on the lives of a compelling cast of characters, each vividly realized with complicated motives, frailties, and strengths." Among the other ten women twelve men who received the grant is jazz pianist Jason Moran, theater director David Cromer,...

    Embracing Claustrophobic Movies

Riffing off such recent movies in tight spaces as Buried and Devil (which are struggling at the b.o.) and Danny Boyle's upcoming 127 Hours, Vulture posts their list of the eleven most claustrophobic films. They note: "Confining your film to a single space certainly has its advantages: a lower budget...

"The Town" Parodied: Boston is "The College Town"

As noted last week, "The Town" is the latest film to contribute to Boston's increased filmic image as a crime-ridden city. From the comments here on Spout and on Twitter and elsewhere, it appears a number of people take no issue since it's no worse a reputation than some others Beantown has suffered through the years. Maybe I know and am read by too many Yankees fans? Anyway, before this past decade and its surplus of Boston-set crime films, I always associated the location primarily with education. Editor Sally Menke Died in Beachwood Canyon During Heat Wave, Dog At Her Side

Editor Sally Menke's body was found by searchers at the bottom of a Beachwood Canyon ravine Tuesday morning, her Lab at her side. She was 56, and had been hiking Monday in L.A.'s extreme heat (which broke the downtown record of 113 degrees Monday, as well as the thermometer recording that record), reports the LAT. I had the pleasure of meeting Menke last year at Lawrence Bender's Oscar party for Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, which she edited, along with all of Tarantino's films. It was great fun talking to her about how she and Tarantino debated the merits of whether to divide the film into five chapters or try to weave it into an...
