    Stepping Into The Past

As long as I’ve been attending the San Francisco Silent Film Festival I’ve been promising myself to visit the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum...and this year I finally got there. Epix Launches October 30

When I first heard that three studios--Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount--were bypassing pay-TV deals in favor of a new online streaming venture, I thought the new distribution order was at hand. While the other studios were still hung up on the old ancillary paradigm, this gang was skipping windows and ...

    Battsek Exits Miramax

Just weeks after Disney announced that Miramax was scaling back to three releases a year (what's the point?), the specialty unit's president, Daniel Battsek, 50, is exiting the company. This is not a surprise, except that like former Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook, Battsek was a company man (18 y...

    Rudolph vs. Schickel Over Altman

I was on a plane to London when I read ex-Time critic Richard Schickel's LAT attack on Robert Altman. I've disagreed with Schickel before; at his best he's a cranky curmudgeon who isn't interested in reading or hearing any point-of-view other than his own.
