Absolutely Insane Footage From Vancouver After Canucks Lost Stanley Cup

I still can't get over how insane things got last night after Vancouver lost. 140 people in the hospital? Multiple STABBINGS!? It's a fucking hockey game, but somehow it resulted in turning a generally calm city into an absolute warzone. First world fucking problems, people.

Despite the Proximity to Hollywood, LA Film Fest 2011 Puts Filmmakers Ahead of Its Stars

The Los Angeles Film Festival may invite the presumption of a Hollywood affair as a result of its location, but there's no question that the ten-day event puts its filmmakers ahead of the commercial glamour. Richard Linklater opens the the Film Independent-produced gathering on Thursday night with his black comedy "Bernie," starring Jack Black. The closing night selection, the horror movie "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," boasts Guillermo Del Toro as a producer (Del Toro also serves as the festival's guest director). In between, LAFF hosts more than 200 films, in addition to conversations with specials guests and industry panels under the monik...

Simon West Keeps Failing Upwards, Now Directing 'The Expendables 2'

If you were to draw up a list of the ten worst directors currently working in Hollywood, you'd have to save space for Simon West, who came out swinging with the botched delirium of sub-Bay actioner "Con Air" and has only gone downhill from there. West's films are cacophonous noise tunnels where the human spirit is unwelcome, where cynicism and craven stupidity triumph over creativity and ingenuity. Each one of his films has either a ripe premise, a great cast, or a too-big budget, only to be squandered by his narrow vision and neanderthal caveman storytelling. Yet somehow, Sylvester Stallone, who normally has an ear for his dyed-in-the-wool f...

Guest Post: The UCLA Festival of New Creative Work by Amy French

The UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television held its Festival of New Creative Work in Los Angeles from June 4th to June 9th. The event showcased the best live action and animated films, scripts, and producer pitches from among the graduate and undergrad classes, voted on first by the students themselves, and then by a group of esteemed industry professionals. This year, there were many young women filmmakers represented among the winners. The best numbers were in the screenplay competition, in which three of the four feature film scripts were written by women (Nicole Riegel, Megan Green, and Diana Densmore). Also, in the animation ni...

James Mangold To Direct 'The Wolverine'

After a period where it looked as if Fox would take a mulligan on "The Wolverine" and bump the film to 2013 or beyond, it now looks like they've found their director. James Mangold, who has dabbled in various genres from musical biopic ("Walk The Line"), to western ("3:10 To Yuma") and horror ("Identity"), is prepared to take on his first comic book adaptation, and the announcement suggests he's the mutual pick from Fox and Hugh Jackman's camp. Mangold appears to be the top choice among an uninspired trio of potential helmers that included Antoine Fuqua and Gavin O'Connor, otherwise known as Guys You Employ When They Are Represented By The Sa...
