(indieWIRE/2.3.2000) -- The lineup for the 50th Berlin International Film Festival was released
this week, with 20 films joining the previously announced Wim Wenders opening
night film "The Million Dollar Hotel" in the Festival's competition
section. Ten additional films will screen as part of the Official Lineup,
either as Out of Competition/Gala screenings, or as special screenings. In
addition, there are 11 shorts programmed.
In addition to several Hollywood or IndieWood films that have recently
opened in the US ("Magnolia," "Any Given Sunday," "The Hurricane," "Man On
The Moon" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley"), the competition features several
highly anticipated films, including "Trainspotting helmer Danny Boyle's
"The Beach," Francois Ozon's "Raining Drops On Burning Rocks" (Gouttes
D'Eau Sur Pierres Brulantes) from France, "The Island Tales" (You Shi
Tiaowu) by Stanley Kwan (Hong Kong/Japan), "Rita's Legends" (Die Stille
Nach Dem Schuss) from Germany's Volker Schloendorff, "Signs and Wonders,"
Jonathan Nossiter's follow-up to his Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner
"Sunday" and China's Zhang Yimou makes the scene with his second film of
late, "The Road Home" (Wo De Fu Qin Mu Qin).
Out of Competition and Gala films include Mary Harron's "American Psycho,"
"Bossa Nova" by Brazil's Bruno, "The Filth And the Fury," by Brit Julien
Temple "Loves Labours Lost," the lastest Shakespeare adaptation by Kenneth
Branagh and "Three Kings," by David O. Russell.
The Forum lineup includes a wide variety of films among its almost 50
films, including Slamdance and Rotterdam entrant "Tuvalu," by Veit Helmer
from Germany; a new doc from "Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the
Media" director Peter Wintonick called "Cinema Verite: Defining The Moment"
from Canada, and "Beau Travail" by Claire Denis.
The Panorama section includes over 50 films, including "Chutney Popcorn"
by Nisha Ganatra; "Cremaster 2" by Matthew Barney ; "Grass" a documentary
by Ron Mann; "Mr Death: The Rise And Fall Of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr" by Errol
Morris; "Shadow Boxers," a doc by Katya Bankowsky, and "The Third Miracle,"
by Agnieszka Holland.

>> Berlin 2000: Announces International Jury
(indieWIRE/2.3.2000) -- The Berlin International Film Festival has announced
the jury that will be awarding prizes during the 50th annual festuval.
The Golden and Silver Bears will be presided over by Chinese actress
Gong Li who has starred in such film as "Red Sorghum" (1988), "Raise the
Red Lantern" (1991), "The Story of Qiu Ju" (1992) and
"Farewell, My Concubine" (1993). She is also a UNESCO Ambassador
and member of the National People's Congress in the People's Republic
of China. Other appointed jury members include: Lissy Bellaiche from
Denmark, German critic Peter W. Jansen, Canadian Jean Lefebvre, Spanish
actress Marisa Paredes, French producer Jean-Louis Piel, Brazilian
director Walter Salles, German actress Maria Schrader and Polish
director Andrzej Wajda.
>> Sundance Channel announces winner of short film contest.
(indieWIRE/2.3.2000) -- Tim Sheehy's short film "Turnstile" has won the
1999 Sundance Channel and Time Warner Cable short filmmaking contest.
The film, an examination of a brief moment between three people, will
air on the Sundance Channel and will screen before films at The
Screening Room in New York City this month. Sheehy, who is currently
in his final year of Columbia Univeristy's MFA film program, studied
anthropolgy at Princeton before working in films.
