DAILY NEWS: Festival Anniversaries. Asian American International and Outfest Unveil Plans

>> AAIFF Celebrates 25th Anniversary

(indieWIRE: 06.10.02) -- The feature film line-up for the 25th Asian American International Film Festival has been announced. More than 25 films will screen at the event, which runs July 19-27 at New York's Asia Society and Museum.

Opening night will feature the North American premiere of the provocative Philippine Muslim drama "New Moon," directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. The closing night film is the New York premiere of Digvijay Singh's "Maya." Several Asian Blockbusters will also screen at the fest, including the Kim Sung-Su's Korean martial arts epic "Musa the Warrior" starring Zhang Ziyi; Johnnie To's action thriller "Fulltime Killer" starring Andy Lau; and Song Hae-seong's Failan, "Takashi Sorimachi." Other highlights include a first-time directors program and a classics program co-selected by Martin Scorsese. [Matthew Ross]

>> Outfest Celebrates 20 Years

(indieWIRE: 06.10.02) -- Outfest, Los Angeles' Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, will celebrate its 20th anniversary next month (July 11 - 22) with a record 241 films and videos from 30 countries. 40,000 people are anticipated for the anniversary event.

Outfest 2002 will kick off with a unique opening night event, a screening of short films from the last 20 years. Dubbed, "An Evening of Sex, Love & Life," the gala will include celebrity presenters and an after-party that will sport a ferris wheel.

Outfest will close with Stanley Kwan's "Lan Yu." Strand Releasing, distributor of the Chinese film, will receive the 6th Outfest Achievement Award on the opening night of the festival, presented to company co-presidents Marcus Hu and Jon Gerrans. Strand's "The Cockettes" will screen under the stars at the John Anson Ford Theater on awards night. [Eugene Hernandez]
