Hit Or Miss: How "Maleficent" Overperformed, Seth and Charlize Died In The West And "Chef" and "Belle" Continue To Benefit From Great Release Dates

There are usually one or two executives at every studio whose main job it is to attempt to work with the MPAA ratings board to nip here or tuck there to achieve a desired rating for each film. Kudos to whoever that person is at Disney for securing a PG rating for "Maleficent"!

"Maleficent" Sleeping Beautifully Overseas With $100 Million Ransom

In the penultimate week prior to the start of the World Cup, Disney's "Maleficent" edged out Fox's "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" to top the overseas box office. The Angelina Jolie film took in a nice round number of $100 million while the X-Men gang was a close second at $95 million.

Warners has a solid hold on the studio box office market share derby and thanks to a big weekend with "Maleficent", Disney has now slipped into the #2 slot. Career Watch: Has 'Maleficent' Restored Angelina Jolie's Box Office Mojo?

Reviews were mixed. But for moviegoers, the $70 million opening for "Maleficent" -- an Angelina Jolie record -- for a rare female summer action adventure suggests that they were transfixed by the sight of the right actress in a perfect-fit role.

Arthouse Audit: 'Restrepo' Sequel 'Korengal' Tops Specialty Box Office; Kelly Reichardt's 'Night Moves' Takes Second

An eclectic group of new releases failed to provide any films with more than niche potential in upcoming weeks. The standout is "Korengal" (Saboteur), a sequel of sorts to the Oscar-nominated documentary feature "Restrepo," which had a New York opening in the range of its predecessor. "Night Moves" ...

Specialty Box Office: Kelly Reichardt's 'Night' Has Decent Moves; Sebastian Junger's 'Korengal' Stronger

Here's a rundown of the specialty box office this weekend, which saw Sebastian Junger's doc "Korengal" top openers in its exclusive engagement debut, narrowly beating out the per-theater-average of Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves," which was in one more theater. News wasn't quite so good for other op...

Jolie's 'Maleficent' Leads Box Office Top Ten with Strong Femme Appeal, Diaz's 'Other Woman' at $81 Million

Angelina Jolie is a huge movie star. Disney knows how to reach a broad family audience led by women. And beloved fairy tales sell. These are some of the lessons learned --yet again--by "Maleficent"'s magnificent $70 million opening, which dwarfed Seth MacFarlane's western spoof "A Million Ways to Di...

Final studio numbers have come in this morning and a decent Saturday pushes Angelina Jolie and "Maleficent" to $70 million for the weekend. Sadly, Saturday wasn't much of a help for "A Million Ways To Die In The West" as the Seth MacFarlane comedy western remains at $17 million and a third place fi...

Box-Office: Angelina Jolie Has The Biggest Opening Weekend Of Her Career With ‘Maleficent’

Angelina Jolie is one of those curious global superstars. To this day, the highest grossing live-action film she’s ever been in was $186 million for 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” And her top five all-time domestic grosses include three animated movies that she never physically appeared in (two of them ...

'Maleficent' Bewitches Friday Box Office, Shows Power of Jolie (and Female Stars)

With "Maleficent," Angelina Jolie now joins Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz, Melissa McCarthy and Rooney Mara as an actress who has recently opened a movie to strong initial returns better, in many cases, than some male stars considered safe bets for franchise efforts.

"Maleficent" Sits Tres Jolie Atop Box Office Mountain, Seth MacFarlane Dies In The West

I'm still waiting for several estimates to come in but it's all Disney and Angelina Jolie at the box office this weekend. Driven by its family friendly PG rating and a large take from its Imax screens, "Maleficent" easily cruised into first place this weekend, grossing an estimated $68-71 million.
