BUZZAt Sundance, "Hounddog" Director Wins VW from Fest Sponsor, a Bad Review from NY Times

Park City coverage sponsored by BE KIND REWIND.

The festival's official awards ceremony is still hours away as we post this link, but as The Reeler notes, "Hounddog" director Deborah Kampmeier has already received the VW Relentless Drive Award from Sundance's official vehicle sponsor. The prize includes a new car and is touted in a full page ad on the back of the festival's official daily newspaper. Meanwhile, the film has stirred audiences all week, and been subjected to a number of negative reviews. Among the harshest comes in the latest festival dispatch from Manohla Dargis in the New York Times:
As sincere as it is stupid, "Hounddog" is pure art-house exploitation, as evidenced by the images of its 12-year-old star dressed in a wet T-shirt and panties, of her writhing on a bed and of her awkwardly grinding in a hootchy-kootchy pantomime to the Elvis Presley song of the film's title. As in "The Accused"...the film's narrative momentum builds to the rape, which is discreetly staged; unfortunately, it is also presented with some of the same tropes of the classic movie love scene: there is a shot of the girl's clutching hand and, after the assault, a close-up of her face. Ms. Fanning's commitment to this material is unwavering in its creepiness.

BUZZWeinstein Company Takes Worldwide Rights to Sundance '07 Feature "Grace is Gone"

Park City coverage sponsored by BE KIND REWIND.

Worldwide rights to James C. Strouse's Sundance dramatic competition feature "Grace is Gone" have been acquired by The Weinstein Company, the company's co-chairman Harvey Weinstein announced Sunday afternoon. The worldwide deal has been pegged at $4 million. Weinstein, Michael Cole, co-head of production, and Michelle Krumm, EVP of acquisitions and co-productions, negotiated the deal on behalf of The Weinstein Company, while Cinetic Media and William Morris Agency represented the filmmakers in negotiations. Starring John Cusack, Alessandro Nivola, Shelan O'Keefe and Gracie Bednarczyk, the film is described as a "heart-wrenching drama about a young father (Cusack) whose soldier wife has just been killed in Iraq. Rather than tell his two daughters the news, he decides to take them on a cross-country road trip to an amusement park. The story was inspired by a similar trip Strouse made with his older brother and his two children several years ago." The film was produced by Cusack's New Crime Productions and Plum Pictures. "'Grace is Gone' moved me beyond words by giving the audience a glimpse into the devastating reality that families are facing every day," commented Weinstein in a statement. "John Cusack's poignant performance blew me away--James has crafted a touching film that will tug at the heartstrings of all moviegoers." "Low and Behold", a movie about post-Katrina victims trying to mend their lives, was filmed on location in New Orleans and was made by Zack Godshall(co-writer/director) and Barlow Jacobs(co-writer/producer/lead actor) and a supplemental cast and crew of other LA natives, many of them real victims of the hurricane. Jared Moshe, of Sidetrack Films said in prepared statement, "This initiative affords all of us the opportunity to take one of the excesses of Sundance and use it to help those ordinary people trying to carry on with their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina." BUZZCHICAGO TRIBUNE: Swag, the Ugly Truth

Park City coverage sponsored by BE KIND REWIND.

When stars and filmmakers worry more about goodies than promoting their films, that's a problem for Jeremy Walker, who runs the New York-based publicity firm Jeremy Walker + Associates. So he pulled a "Jerry Maguire" and wrote up his "Swagifesto," which he sent out a few days ago to the stars and filmmakers of the films he is representing at this year's Sundance festival. BUZZDocumentaries to Remain at the Heart of Sundance

Park City coverage sponsored by BE KIND REWIND.

After the Sundance Film Festival ends, even the best documentaries find it hard to land lucrative commercial distribution deals. Regardless of success in the market, Sundance has renewed its commitment to keep the nonfiction genre at the forefront of the festival by showing the documentary "Chicago 10" as its opening film. "By opening the festival with this film, we really are making a statement about the importance of documentaries," Robert Redford said at a news conference. Mary Milliken reports
