iW NEWS | Studio Grabs Gray's "Night" Ahead of Cannes Competition Debut
A pair of private Cannes screenings in recent days have stirred buyers at the Marche du Film. On Saturday, Columbia Pictures acquired North American rights to James Gray's " We Own The Night," a Cannes competition film executive produced and financed by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner's 2929 Productions. It was produced by Marc Butan and Nick Wechsler. Insiders close to the pact pegged the large deal at about $11 million. John Sloss' Cinetic Media exclusively handled North American rights to the movie and brokered the deal with Peter Schlessel, Sony Pictures' head of worldwide acquisitions. 2929 International is handling international sales. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, and Robert Duvall, the film won't have its official premiere in Cannes until Friday, so Cinetic organized a private showing for select buyers and the bidding quickly began.
Meanwhile, at the IM Global Riviera suite, buyers have been streaming in to watch ten minutes of raw footage from Larry Charles' untitled documentary project featuring Bill Maher. Charles sent a few selects to Cannes for an afternoon screening that filled the IM Global stand with nearly 200 people. CAA is brokering a U.S. deal for the movie and top reps from The Weinstein Company, Miramax, Paramount Vantage, New Line, Warner Independent, Lionsgate, ThinkFilm, Magnolia, Overture, and Roadside Attractions were among the companies watching the footage. More buyers lined up on Saturday morning at the IM global stand to view the footage as well. [Eugene Hernandez]

iW NEWS | Koch Lorber Has Designs on Marconi Doc "Lagerfeld Confidential" for North America
Koch Lorber Films has acquired theatrical, home entertainment, TV and digital rights in North America for director Rodolphe Marconi's " Lagerfeld Confidential," the company announced from Cannes Friday. Lorber plans an October U.S. roll out of the Berlinale '08 doc in October, followed by a DVD, television and digital release in 2008.
Marconi crafted the film in collaboration with Chanel's leader and tour de force Karl Lagerfeld, capturing 150 hours of one of haute couture's most charismatic yet enigmatic figures. The film gives an insider view of the inner-circle and passions that swirl around Lagerfeld, including his love for photography as well as a behind-the-runway look at some of Chanel's catwalk extravaganzas. Lagerfeld speaks freely of his philosophical take on life.
"My life is change, the principle of my life is change," Lagerfeld repeatedly asserts in the film, saying he "is only as good as his previous collection." Images of him photographing actress and Chanel model Nicole Kidman, visiting Monaco's Princess Caroline or taking time off at his retreat in Biarritz nevertheless presents a figure who appears intoxicated by his work.
Marconi also delves into the personal, though appears hesitant to question Lagerfeld about his love life, which provides for some exhilarating tension. "Why don't you just ask what you really want to ask," the severely dressed designer asks after Marconi surreptitiously inquires about his sexual tastes. Yet, the film seems to enhance the enigma, which Lagerfeld handily promotes. "What is the real Karl Lagerfeld...?" he asks rhetorically. "Circumstances determine what is reality..." [Brian Brooks]

iW NEWS | De Niro and Pacino Team Up for "indie" Cop Thriller
Actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are teaming up on a film to be directed by Jon Avnet (" 88 Minutes") titled " Righteous Kill," a $60 million project to be produced by Nu Image's Millennium Films. Set to begin shooting in Connecticut and New York August 6, the film was described by producers Avi Lerner and Randall Emmett of Emmett/Furla Films as a thriller about two cops, played by De Niro and Pacino, chasing a serial killer.
"[This film] is an event for me, I've never been involved with such iconic actors," said Lerner from the Noga Hilton hotel to a group of journalists Thursday afternoon in Cannes. "I know other people will compare ["Righteous"] to other films the two have appeared in together like ' Heat' or ' Godfather II,' but this is the first time they're both together for [most] of the film."
Lerner touted the project's indie credentials, despite the seemingly big budget, explaining that the film is not being produced in partnership with a studio. Lerner, one of six producing the film, said financing is coming entirely from their camp. "If a studio put together this, it would be a $100 million [movie] but we're doing it for sixty," he said. "We believe the independent world can do it more effectively, more cost-effective and with a heart... We feel like we're making history."
Emmett said talks on the project, which will be written by Russell Gerwitz (" Inside Man"), went late into the night. Millennium exec Lonnie Ramati negotiated the deal with CAA who represented Gerwitz as well as De Niro and Pacino. [Brian Brooks]

The companies will share the North American rights and will release the film theatrically and on DVD. Arthouse individually acquired the Worldwide rights and will represent the film during the Cannes Market. DocFactory, the new documentary film production company founded to champion and produce films focusing on world issues, has announced their second project, " News For Sale." Formed as a collective under DocFactory, filmmakers Gary Graham, Dan Cantagallo, and Jean-Phillippe Tremblay are the team behind "Sale." The film is the first project developed by DocFactory from conception to production and (eventually) distribution. It is due for completion by the end of 2007.
