BUZZiW BOT UPDATE | "Pajamas," "InSearchOf" Lead Chart

Box Office coverage presented by Rentrak Theatrical

Mark Herman's "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" led this past weekend's iW BOT box office chart, which was published this afternoon. The Miramax release grossed $253,085 from 17 screens for an average of $14,887. Just behind was Zeke Zelker's "InSearchOf," released through Independent Dream Machine, which grossed $12,608 from a sole screen in Allentown. The film overcome a note slapped on their poster, without their promotion that stated the film was for "mature audiences only" and that "no one under 18 permitted." "This is basically telling people that they are about to see porn, which is furthest from the truth," Zelker told indieWIRE. Rounding out the iW BOT top five were Anchor Bay's "The Alphabet Killer," Peace Arch Entertainment's "JCVD" and Maya Releasing's "August Evening," each finding averages in the $9-11,000 range. indieWIRE's regular Monday box office column will return next week. Box Office coverage presented by Rentrak Theatrical

According to estimates from Rentrak this afternoon, Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky" led indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) - which ranks the per theater average of all reporting specialty films. The Miramax release averaged $12,222 in its second weekend, grossing $110,000 from 9 locations. The top specialty opener that reported estimates was Caroline Suh's "Frontrunners," which grossed $7,364 on 1 screen for Oscilloscope Pictures. Other openers included Magnolia Pictures' "What Just Happened?," which grossed $216,000 on 36 screens for a decent $6,000 average, and IFC Films' "Filth and Wisdom," which grossed $5,149 from its one run. While certainly not a horrible number, Madonna's "Filth" lost the battle of the dueling soon-to-be-ex-spouses, as Guy Ritchie's "RockNRolla" averaged $5,955 from 22 screens in its second weekend out. indieWIRE will publish its weekly box office column Monday night and the full iW BOT Tuesday afternoon. BUZZiW NEWS UPDATE | Weekend Estimates: "Towelhead," "Flow" Lead Openers

Box Office coverage presented by Rentrak Theatrical

According to estimates from Rentrak this afternoon, Alan Ball's "Towelhead" led indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) - which ranks the per theater average of all reporting specialty films. The Warner Independent Films released grossed $53,000 on 4 screens for a $13,250 average. Oscilloscope's doc "Flow" also opened well. The Irena Salina directed film grossed $18,050 on 2 screens for a $9,045 average. And though its wide release makes it ineligible for iW BOT, Joel and Ethan Coen's "Burn After Reading" open at the top of the overall box office chart with a rather stunning $19,403,679 gross from 2,651 theaters. Certainly the all-time highest opening for a Coens' film (the previous benchmark was "The Ladykillers," which opened to $12,634,563), the Focus Features release opened well above expectations. Things weren't so good for all openers. Fred Ashman's doc "Proud American," released by Lightsource, opened on a strangely large 750 screens and grossed just $135,000. That amounts to a $180 average. indieWIRE will publish its weekly box office column Monday night and the full iW BOT Tuesday afternoon. Get the latest in the indieWIRE Box Office section. Box Office coverage presented by Rentrak Theatrical

According to indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) estimates from Rentrak this afternoon, First Look's "Sukiyaki Western Django" led the reporting specialty films for the second weekend in a row. Directed by Takashi Miike, the film $5,094 on one screen, for the highest per-theatre average in a very weak weekend on both studio and specialty fronts. Two Sony Pictures Classics titles were next, "I Served The King of England," which grossed $72,109 on 17 screens for a $4,242 average in its second weekend, and Courtney Hunt's "Frozen River," which grossed $314,795 on 91 screens for an impressive sixth weekend average of $3,459. The weekend's sole reporting opener, Roadside Attractions' "Everybody Wants To Be Italian," grossed a weak $217,770 on 98 screens, averaging just $2,222. But that's certainly better than the second wide weekend for Focus Features' "Hamlet 2." It grossed just $819,409 from 1575 screens. Its $520 average was the third lowest of any film reporting, studio or specialty. indieWIRE will publish four-day estimates Monday and its weekly box office column Tuesday night. Also opening was Sony Pictures Classics's "I Served The King of England," which grossed a decent $67,906 on 8 screens for a $8,488 average. Andrew Fleming's "Hamlet 2" was a large disappointment in its first weekend of wide release. Expanding to 1,597 screens, the Focus Featurespurchase grossed just $2.12 million, averaging a dismal $1,330. According to indieWIRE Box Office Tracking (iW BOT) estimates from Rentrak this afternoon, First Look's "Sukiyaki Western Django" led the reporting specialty films in the three-day portion of Labor Day weekend, grossing $10,236 on one screen. Behind it was the opening of Sony Pictures Classics's "I Served The King of England," which grossed $53,554 on 8 screens for a $6,694 average. The real winners of the the rather slow weekend, though, were a pair of Penelope Cruz holdovers. Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" remained on 692 screens and fell just one tenth of a percent from last weekend, grossing $3.00 million and taking its total to $12.78 million. Isabel Coixet's "Elegy" went from 92 to 139 screens and grossed $647,000, taking its total to $1.57 million. Courtney Hunt's "Frozen River" also continued to shine. Now on 69 screens, the Sony Pictures Classics hit and Sundance winner grossed $287,000 to bring its total to $779,000. Meanwhile, Andrew Fleming's "Hamlet 2" became an official failure this weekend, joining the ranks of the most unfortunate Sundance purchases. Expanding to 1,597 screens, the Focus Features flick grossed just $1.68 million, averaging $1,051. Among holdovers, two Penelope Cruz starrers, "Elegy," and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," held on very nicely. "Elegy" expanded from 6 to 92 screens for IDP/Samuel Goldwyn Films and held on to a promising $5,458 average, while "Barcelona" continued to show strength on its static 692 screens, taking in a another $3,003,000.
