Canada's Genies Toast "Polytechnique," Snub "Mother"

Perhaps the most discussed Canadian film on the festival circuit last year - and its submission to the Academy Awards, Xavier Dolan's "I Killed My Mother," was almost entirely snubbed at this morning's announcement of the 30th Annual Genie Awards, Canada's version of the Oscars. "Mother"'s sole recognition came as being the winner of the annual Claude Jutra Award, which recognizes the outstanding achievement of a first-time filmmaker. Instead, Dolan's fellow Quebecois filmmaker Denis Villeneuve dominated the nods with his drama about the 1989 Montreal massacre, "Polytechnique." The film took 11 nominations, including best feature film, best ...

Eugene Hernandez: Megabucks v. Made on a Shoestring or "Avatar" v. "Hurt Locker"

Twenty three weeks ago, in a column, I called awards season a marathon. Back in mid-September -- just a few weeks or so into the season -- as I considered ten films I'd watched that might figure prominently at the end of the year. Now we've passed 26th mile marker with under a week to go before Osca...

For Your Consideration: Predicting The Animated, Foreign & Doc Feature Winners

Before next week's final pre-Oscar column that intends to run down each and every category for your prognosticatory pleasure, this very last category-by-category batch edition of "For Your Consideration" takes on the three non-Best Picture best pictures, where the alleged best in animation, documentary, and foreign filmmaking fight for the Academy's often debated stamp of excellence. While the expanded-to-ten best picture category did allow for one example of the generally underacknowledged trio to make the cut (Pixar's "Up," which became the second animated film ever nominated after 1991's "Beauty and the Beast"), dreams of a first-time doc...

Spirits 2010 | "Paranormal"'s Peli: "The film had to have the look and feel of authentic home video"

Made for only $15,000, Oren Peli's breakout horror hit "Paranormal Activity" went on to conquer the US box office. Now, nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, Peli discusses how his out-of-left-field hit came to be.

Oscars 2010 | Maggie Gyllenhaal: "I feel very vulnerable watching myself in this movie."

"The release of this movie was tied completely to the awards season," Maggie Gyllenhaal told indieWIRE regarding Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," for which she has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. "And I could feel it so strongly. For example, when Jeff Bridges won the Golden Globe, all of a sudden ten people a day would stop me on the street and tell me they'd seen the movie. It had such a huge effect. You know, I'd been through the awards stuff before [receiving Golden Globe nominations for both "Secretary" and "Sherrybaby"], at least going on the road and doing some of it... But I've never felt so concretely th...
