TIFF Review: The Stories We Tell - Sarah Polley's Effective New Documentary

Toronto loves Sarah Polley. The display of that love was evident last week at the premiere of her first documentary Stories We Tell which held its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. I was able to see the film with an audience rather than at a press screening, and the lov...

Review: 'Bait 3D' Joins The Ranks of Forgettable Cheap Shark Thrillers

In the fine tradition of “Shark Night 3D,” “Piranha 3DD” and the direct-to-DVD “Deep Blue Sea 4” that surely exists in another dimension, comes “Bait 3D,” an Australian-Singapore co-production once again warning us to stay out of the deep end. In an in...

TIFF Review: Low Energy 'Wasteland' A Forgettable Brit Crime Flick

Every six months or so it seems the British film industry cranks out another modestly budgeted crime flick. Usually identified by a cast of recognizable but not quite famous faces, a desaturated color scheme, working class setting and familiar plot machinations, these are comfort food for genre fans...

Review: 'Trouble With The Curve' Is A Lifeless Baseball Drama That Throws A Few Innings Too Many

Despite a recent mishap involving an empty chair meant to be President Barack Obama, actor Clint Eastwood has been relatively out of sight when it comes to the press. He mostly turns up at awards shows come January every year or so, and he’s perhaps best known at this point for his work behind...

TIFF Capsule Review: 'God Loves Caviar'

A breezy account of how a Greek sailor, Varvakis (Sebastian Koch) survives the Greek Civil War, before ending up working out of a Russian brothel from where he discovers a method of preserving caviar. As trade with Greece booms, the money starts pouring in.  Starting off with an older Varvakis secluded on an island chatting to McCormic (John Cleese), the clunky narrative is told in flashback and with a jaunty tone. There is not much to recommend as the story swings wildly from one set piece to another. Of minor note: Catherine Deneuve has a cameo appearance as Catherine the Great in director Iannis Smaragdis’ turgid tale. Critic...

TIFF Capsule Review: 'When I Saw You'

Annemarie Jacir has done something remarkable in her sophomore feature film. She’s managed to couch the tricky subject of the 1967 Palestinian-Israeli war into the romanticised tale of a mother’s love for her son. Having been separated from their father (presumed dead) as Israel began...

TIFF Review: 'Underground' A Lean, Compact Look At The Early Life Of Julian Assange

Part of understanding Julian Assange is knowing that he's spent nearly his entire life on the run. While he's currently holed up in Ecuador's embassy in the U.K., this latest roadblock for the hacker/activist is just another bump in a lifetime that has seen him constantly on the move. What many folk...
