Venice '11 Review: Al Pacino's 'Wilde Salome' An Oddity Dominated By Titanic Jessica Chastain Turn

When did Alfredo James Pacino, Greatest Actor Of His Generation, turn into Shouty Al, Star Of "Righteous Kill" And "Jack and Jill"? The exact moment that the transformation took place is debatable, but it's hard to deny that, aside from some occasional good HBO work, Pacino has become a grotesque, bellowing inflation of former glories more often than not. But we live in hope that it's not a one way street, and that the star may find his way back to subtler movie work that he actually cares about. After all, he does, unlike many of his contemporaries, continue to return to the stage frequently, for much-praised performances, in the likes of "O...

Geez, with the Venice Film Festival kicking off tomorrow, it looks like PR teams have decided to turn all of their faucets of images and clips on at the same time. So here's another sneak peek, but this time of a movie we haven't really heard all that much about.

Bette Midler Bails On David Mamet's Phil Spector Biopic On 'Doctor's Orders'

It's easy to forget these days what a big star Bette Midler was for a period of time. A Broadway and recording star who made her movie debut with thinly-veiled Janis Joplin biopic "The Rose," Midler had a series of successes in the 80s and 90s, up to 1996's surprise smash "The First Wives Club," but...

Al Pacino and Barry Levinson Reteaming To Adapt Philip Roth Novel 'The Humbling'

Levinson Talks Prospect Of Helming Mob Epic 'Gotti: Three Generations'For someone who's almost incontestably one of the greatest living American novelists (there will always be naysayers...) Philip Roth has never fared well on the big screen. "Goodbye, Columbus is mostly forgotten, but fairly decent, but "Portnoy's Complaint," "The Human Stain" and "Elegy" (an adaptation of "The Dying Animal") were all disasters of varying degrees, despite excellent source material. But Hollywood ain't done with Roth yet, with news breaking that a veteran director and star, fresh off a recent success together, are joining forces again to adapt a recent work f...

Al Pacino To Star In Rocker Dramedy 'Imagine'

Well, this is an interesting bit of casting. With Steve Carell busier than ever with "The Office" now in the rearview mirror, the comic actor has had to shed one of the many projects he's been linked to in the past few months. Dude has to eat and sleep sometime. Stepping away as an actor, but remain...

Oliver Stone Reveals Sidney Lumet & Al Pacino Nearly Made 'Platoon'

For director Oliver Stone, "Platoon" would mark the beginning of the meatiest part of the director's career. The Vietnam film, the first in a loose trilogy (followed by "Born On The Fourth Of July" and "Heaven & Earth"), made a star out of its young lead Charlie Sheen, and it went to the Oscars that with year with eight nominations, walking away with four wins including Best Picture and Best Director (not to mention that Stone's other film that year, "Salvador," also earned two nods). It would be Stone's second Oscar (he won for writing "Midnight Express" in 1979) and it established the writer/director as a major voice. But as he tells it now...

Bette Midler & Jeffrey Tambor Join Al Pacino Starring, David Mamet Directed HBO Phil Spector Project

First revealed last year, this is one of those projects that seemed too good to be true and when word around it died as quickly as it arrived, we figured that it wasn't coming along. Guess we were (thankfully) wrong.

Al Pacino Reteams With Barry Levinson For 'Gotti: Three Generations'; James Toback To Rewrite Script

Ok, we have to admit, the indie gangster biopic "Gotti: Three Generations" always seemed more like an expensive publicity stunt than an actual movie to us, but full respect to Fiore Films, they now have our full attention as there has been some tremendous movement on the picture over the past couple...
