'Top Gun 2' Gets A New Lease Of Life With 'Street Fighter' Writer

I feel the need, the need to open my copy of Final Draft: a potential sequel to "Top Gun" has been gestating for awhile, with the project officially going into development a few years ago, with Peter Craig ("The Town") penning a script, and original director Tony Scott and star Tom Cruise said to be...

'Bloodsport' Remake Gets A Kick In The Face From 'V for Vendetta' Director James McTeigue

Oh, don't act so surprised. Those of you with a good memory will recall that about two years ago, talk of a "Bloodsport" remake burbled up with Phillip Noyce ("Patriot Games," "Salt," "Clear And Present Danger") set to direct a "reinvention" of the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic. And then nothing was...

    The Raven—movie review

Poor Edgar Allan Poe can’t get a break from Hollywood—at least, not since Roger Corman made his famous adaptations in the 1960s with Vincent Price. Even the 1963 Corman movie called 'The Raven' with Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, and young Jack Nicholson had nothing to do with Poe’s immortal poe...

Review: Cusack and McTeigue's 'The Raven' Does Not Live Up to Literary Promise

Since his ‘90s heyday, John Cusack has seemed plagued by a never-ending struggle to find roles that fit his watchable talents with anything resembling snugness. Where he once made funky-weird blockbusters like "Con Air," bringing his patented brand of wry, whip-smart detachment to the outlandishness...

Review: Dim-Witted Edgar Allan Poe Thriller 'The Raven' Is Too Boring To Be A Guilty Pleasure

About ten minutes into James McTeigue's "The Raven," a large, hairy man -- a writer and a critic, as it turns out -- is strapped to a table by a mysterious figure. A mighty blade, inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit And The Pendulum," hangs forbodingly above him. And to his unseen captor, he scre...

SIMON SAYS: Productive Awfulness, or: THE RAVEN Opens This Week

I often wonder if there is such a thing as a productively awful film.

James McTeigue To Direct Period Crime Drama 'Ness/Capone' For Relativity

Former Wachowski Brothers protégé James McTeigue (he directed both "V for Vendetta" and the gory-good "Ninja Assassin" for the Brothers and producer Joel Silver) has apparently made the suits at Relativity happy. The director helmed their forthcoming Edgar Allan Poe thriller "The Raven," and accord...

James McTeigue Gets A 'Message From The King'

While James McTeigue hasn't made his defining film yet, under the guidance of The Wachowskis he has proven himself to be an able and stylish director. Cutting his teeth with the duo as an Assistant Director on "The Matrix" trilogy and a Second Unit director on "Speed Racer," he was given the his first shot behidn the director's chair with "V For Vendetta," a kind of silly, very Wachowski-an adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel. From there he tried to save the disastrous "The Invasion," brought in at the last minute to try and salvage whatever he could before moving on to his second effort, "Ninja Assassin." Next year's "The Raven" is poi...
