Steve Zaillian Earns 2 WGA Nominations; Woody Allen, Diablo Cody & Alexander Payne Also In The Race

Scorecards will be adjusted and awards prognosticator types will have to adjust their bets, as the WGA have revealed their nominees for their annual awards. Why do we care? The guilds have traditionally been the best augurs for how the Oscar nominees will take shape, mostly because these are the sam...

Justin Timberlake, R-Rated Rom-Coms, Bradley Cooper, Marvel & Some Of The Big Winners At The Box Office 2011

There was no pattern of box office success for 2011. One could point to the audience rejecting obvious pandering nerd bait like "Cowboys And Aliens," but then how does that explain "Transformers"? People can celebrate R-rated comedies, but what does that mean for "The Change...

PETER TONGUETTE: EVERYONE SAYS I LOVE YOU is a stealthy Christmas classic

By the time I saw Woody Allen’s Christmas movie Everyone Says I Love You, Christmas was over, and so was New Year’s Eve. It wasn’t until some dreary day in the middle of something like February that the film reached us, weeks after the tree had been taken out to the curb and the confetti swept away....

Sony Pictures Classics Pick Up Woody Allen's 'Nero Fiddled,' Plan Summer 2012 Release

Despite being, in our eyes at least, not noticeably better in quality than recent fare like "Vicky Christina Barcelona" or "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger," the amiable "Midnight in Paris" became Woody Allen's most successful film in decades this year -- it'...

    Best Films of 2011

If there were ever a year to be wimpy and declare a tie, this would have been it: choosing between my Number 1 and Number 2 films was just silly. One is big, the other smaller; both are ambitious and perfectly made, but in wildly different ways. I adore them both.

Now and Then: For Woody Allen, the Place is the Thing, from Manhattan to Midnight in Paris

When asked about Woody Allen's New York, critics often cite the glorious black-and-white Gershwin cinepoem that opens “Manhattan” (1979). I’ve always been partial, though, to the rough magic of Diane Keaton’s terrible driving in “Annie Hall” (1977). (See clips below.)

In Praise Of Woody Allen: A Personal Ode.

Like many Americans reared on eighties pop culture, I first discovered the potential of cinema by way of Steven Spielberg. The escapism of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," derivative as it may have been to viewers more readily familiar with the matinee serials that inspired it, brought an exotic...
