Hong Kong International Film Festival

details

highlights

  • Screening over 330 titles from 50 countries in 12 major cultural venues in Hong Kong, the HKIFF reaches an audience of over 600,000 and 4,500 business executives attending the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART).
  • As one of the oldest film festivals in Asia, the global reputation of the HKIFF was built on the pioneering work of programming Asian films and its retrospectives when Asian and Hong Kong cinema were not well known to the international community.
  • HKIFF is officially corporatized as an independent, charitable organization – Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited, after completing its 28th edition.
  • The Hong Kong Government has continued to subsidize the festival through venue provision and funding for up to 7 million Hong Kong dollars.

Hong Kong International Film Festival

Since it was founded in 1977, the Hong Kong International Film Festival has grown into one of Asia's largest film events, screening over 300 films annually. In particular, the festival promotes the latest Chinese cinema and the work of Asian filmmakers. As both Hong Kong's film scene and Asian cinema have increased in stature over the last couple decades, so, in turn, has the festival's prominence. indieWIRE has not attended this festival but it is widely considered of the leading film festivals in Asia.Originally a government sponsored event, the festival was taken over in 2004 by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, a nonprofit organization, which is also responsible for the important Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum and the annual Asian Film Awards. Since then, the HKIFFS has worked to transform the festival from a local event into a global, industry-focused marketplace.
