International Festival of New Latin American Cinema

The 1st International Festival of New Latin American Cinema of Havana took place from December 3 - 10, 1979. in Havana. On that occasion, the event hosted over 600 filmmakers from Latin America and had jury presidents Gabriel García Márquez (Fiction) and Santiago Álvarez (Documentaries and Cartoons). Grand Prize Winners were Geraldo Sarno Coral (Colonel Delmiro Gouveia, Brazil) and Sergio Giral (Maluala, Cuba), in Fiction, Patricio Guzmán (The Battle of Chile: the struggle of a people without weapons, Chile), Documentary, and Juan Padrón (Elpidio Valdés, Cuba) in Animation.

The Festival aims to recognize and disseminate films with significant and artistic values ​​to enrich and reaffirm the Latin American and Caribbean cultural identity. The festival is held annually with contests in Fiction, Documentary and Animation, Opera Raw, Unpublished Scripts and Posters. There are also organized meetings and seminars on various topics of cultural interest, especially cinema. Also, the program of the Festival hosts a large and representative sample of contemporary cinema from around the world.
