Morelia International Film Festival

Morelia International Film Festival

In just nine years, the Morelia International Film Festival in the Mexican state of Michoacan has become a magnet event for audiences and industry, with a nice mix of international guests to round out the festival.Situated in beautiful downtown Morelia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the festival brings attendees to the oldest areas of the city for screenings that are typically packed with locals, including a number of younger folks from the university. An outgrowth of events that began by showcasing short films, but which expanded to broader programming of documentary and narrative features over the years, the Morelia festival is an important event for new talent. The event touts itself as a crucial "meeting point" connecting Mexican filmmakers, industry, and audiences. The festival got a big boost two years ago when Mexican President Felipe Calderon arrived for opening night. Gael Garcia Bernal and his Ambulante traveling doc fest have also been supportive of the event. Cinepolis, the largest theater owner in the Latin America, is a huge supporter, with its CEO Alejandro Ramirez Magaña serving as the Morelia fest’s president. [Eugene Hernandez]
