An increasingly important documentary festival in the north of England, Sheffield Doc/Fest has gained stature over the course of its sixteen years, becoming a key stop, especially for British industry and international visitors.Festival organizers boast some 1200 industry delegates at their event, a large number for a localized, doc specific event that also draws a large collection of those who work in television. The event serves as a forum for industry, including distributors, commissioning agents, and producers, as well as filmmakers and emerging talent. While the event, held annually in wet and damp November, doesn't boast the most charming weather, Sheffield itself is a quaint, cozy locale for the international documentary community to gather, socialize, discuss, and watch the newest in non-fiction and factual entertainment. It boasts two universities with strong cinema, journalism, and media programs; a large and interested student population; and screening and panel venues. Sheffield Doc/Fest's programs include MeetMarket, which matches doc makers and international buyers together; as well as regular pitch workshops in various cities to help doc makers gain experience in conveying their projects to potential financiers.
