Starz Denver Film Festival
The Starz Denver Film Festival has been a rising star on the regional fest circuit for the past several years, with strong programming and resources that ensure a good time for visiting industry, journalists, and filmmakers. Organizers of the event are, quite simply, a very fun crowd, and they care about film and how it is presented at their festival, which takes place in early November. Venues are easily accessible in downtown Denver, though traveling between the event's main venues and hotels or parties may involve a short taxi ride. The Denver Film Society, which organizes the flagship film festival as well as other year-round events, opened its Starz FilmCenter in 2002, a seven-screen independent moviehouse at the Tivoli Student Union, which offers great venues for its yearly roster. With its liveliness and informal atmosphere (the festival has long hosted a late-night lounge that is a bacchanalia to be witnessed), DIFF has attracted an industry/press crowd that would be the envy of similar regional events. Though major sponsor Starz is still on board, as with any festival these days, it remains to be seen how well DIFF will be able to sustain its material hospitality, though its veteran team happily is still in place after a brief but tumultuous staff and board shake-up in 2009.
