Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival

details

Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival

A northern Greek port town is the site of this fourteen-year-old documentary festival, an off-shoot of the city's popular and well-respected annual fall international festival. The event is non-competitive, though does offer audience awards as well as couple of special prizes. The festival focuses its programming on docs that explore social and cultural issues. Different festival sections are devoted to contemporary themes, historical subjects, personal stories, the environment, music, and an increasing emphasis on supporting Greek film and filmmakers. In addition, organizers develop a tribute to established, significant figures in non-fiction film - past honorees have included, among others, Werner Herzog, Bruce Weber, Monika Treut, David & Albert Maysles, and Kim Longinotto.

Mixing a documentary market with a program that includes a cross section of international films, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival has developed a solid reputation as a showcase for non-fiction film, especially work from Greece and Cyprus. For the industry, it offers a pitching forum to support the funding of new work.
