From Stitch to Screen: Contemporary Canadian Costume Design (TIFF 11)

I just moderated a panel on something I knew absolutely nothing about until two weeks ago when I began to delve into the job of a costume designer in film. The imagination involved, the convincing of the producer and director that the designer's vision enriches their own vision for the film, the convincing the actor to step into into the character by wearing the costume, the management of cutters, sewers, the buying of clothes, of fabrics, ordering fabrics from China, making 30 copies of each costume, keeping the blood stains on each in sync wi...

    Palm Spring International ShortFest Awards

Shorts are having an impact on new digital media and new types of distribution. Their importance and their filmmakers' importance has long been recognized by the top festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, TIFF) and among the trade, agents keep an eye on the top shorts filmmakers. So too, certain leading shorts film festivals and markets, the leaders of which are Clermont Ferrand in France and Oberhausen in Germany (for more cutting edge shorts), festivals like the Guanajuato International Film Festival, Expresión en Corto, held during the final week of July in the cities of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato Capital, Mexico and the Palm Spr...

    Women to Watch: Helga Stephenson

Helga StephensonWhen I first began attending the Toronto Festival of Festivals as it was called in 1985, Helga was its executive director and she introduced me to her second in command, Piers Handling who has taken good care of us ever since. We still meet in Toronto and in December at the Havana Film Festival in Cuba. A few days after that infamous day September 11, she invited the stranded Americans to her home for comfort. For a while she disappeared into the corporate Viacom in Toronto, or would reappear wearing various different hats. Now she has been appointed interim CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, replacing S...
