Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, the early short films of Christine Vachon, Todd Haynes and Barry Elsworth — who formed Apparatus Films together in the 1980s — have been recovered and restored. Metrograph is celebrating this small victory for independent film by presenting a retrospective that begins on Friday, December 9 and runs until Thursday, December 15.
The series consists of two five-film programs, with each work lasting anywhere between six and 45 minutes.
The first of these includes Vachon’s “A Man in Your Room,” which runs just six minutes. Here’s a synopsis: “A priest wakes up repeatedly from a dream, in which he sees an attractive, partially-disrobed man in in his room. The hypnotic repetition and anxiety of his vision gains tension from the minimalist score.” (Metrograph)
