Horsing around after the
New York Film Critics Circle dinner Sunday night at Cipriani 42nd St. are award-winning D.P.
Chris Doyle and
James Schamus (right) with
Ethan Hawke. Doyle was a humorously distruptive presence at the event, introduced as a "contemporary legend on screen and off screen" and "a man of substance and many substances." When it was said that he shot 8 films
for Wong Kar-wai, the Asian auteur yelled out: "With...", giving Doyle a handshake held high above their heads for all to see. Any rumored ill will between the two seems to have faded...but was certainly referenced.
Later, on stage, Doyle seemingly thanked Wong for being a demanding director, calling him "the horrible shadow with glasses hanging over me...with a great location and no script", and then adding, "I am pushed by this fucker who says, 'Is that all you can do Chris?" However, he then thanked WKW and leaving the stage again gave him a high-five handshake.
