Cinema Society and NYC Heat Welcome “Inglorious Basterds”

by Brian Brooks (August 19, 2009)

Monday night may very well have been the warmest of the Summer so far in New York City, but it didn’t seem to scare away too many from the NYC debut screening of Quentin Tarantino’s Cannes competition film, “Inglorious Basterds,” hosted by the Cinema Society and Hugo Boss. Tarantino and cast members Christoph Waltz - who does an amazing job - as well as Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Mike Myers, Melanie Laurent and producer Lawrence Bender were joined by an equally impressive cast of people ranging from Sir Ben Kingsley, Gina Gershon, Sam Rockwell, Julia Stiles, Lindsay Lohan, John Stamos and Moby to author Salman Rushdie and cast members from “Ugly Betty,” “Gossip Girl,” “Entourage,” “Weeds,” and “Mad Men” as well as Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir braved the swealtering heat at the newish Standard Hotel for the film’s after-party at a great mostly outdoor venue under the city’s new High Line park. The Grey Goose and plentiful champagne helped keep the heat away (along with the well placed fans around the crowded party). Saffir gushed about the film introducing it earlier before teh screening in Chelsea, saying it was “spectacular.” Harvey Weinstein introduced Quentin Tarantino and the cast. And then Tarantino decided to forgo all the formalities and said, “thanks for waiting… Are you guys ready to see some ‘Basterds’ fuck up some Nazis…? I said, ‘ARE YOU READY TO SEE SOME BASTERDS FUCK UP SOME NAZIS!!!!’” And with that, the screening began. Great movie in our opinion. Weinstein Company opens the film in the U.S. Friday, August 21 and Universal has the film in other territories.
