10th Florida, Still Homespun in the Post-"Blair Witch" Period, but Maybe Not For Long
Just as it has become an increasingly negotiable commodity of Sundance, Toronto, et al., the Florida Film Festival's hallmark remains a very grassroots approach to doing your own thing. Decked out with lots of down-home charm by festival directors Sigird Tiedtke and Peg O'Keefe, and programmed with a strong lineup of national and regional premieres by programming director Matthew Curtis, this excellent regional film event, now in its 10th year, is a bastion of unfettered moviegoing. The festival opened this year on June 8 with the Florida premiere of "The Anniversary Party" (one of a handful of already-sold indies getting a local launch), and the ensuing week revealed a series of choice works, notable both for their quality and for several strains of karmic interconnectivity. Critic Scott Foundas reports, praising local discoveries like John Ryman's quirky "The Zeros" and Sundance hidden treasures like Ari Gold's "Helicopter," Allison Anders' "Things Behind the Sun," and Cory McAbee's "The American Astronaut," among others. 11th Cinequest Makes Digital Official; Leacock and Spike Lee Tell It Like It Is
The old saying, "When it rains, it pours" took on both literal and emotional meaning at the 11th annual Cinequest San Jose Film Festival (Feb. 22-March 4). More than 47,000 film fans -- a 17% increase over last year's attendance -- braved sometimes-torrential downpours to pack festival events. In fact, Cinequest officials reported that more than half of Cinequest's screenings and panels were sold out. It's probably no surprise, then, that The Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide named Cinequest one of the world's top 10 film festivals. "Cinequest's board and staff are very honored by this recognition, especially since Cinequest is only a decade old," said Halfdan Hussey, Cinequest's executive director. Cynthia Gentry reports on festival tributees like Spike Lee and Richard Leacock, the inaugural year of Cinequest DXD (Digital by Digital), new films shot on 24p high-definition cameras and black filmmakers breaking out of the box. 1st Silverlake: East of the Highland Curtain
You know your neighborhood has reached its gentrification peak when a film festival suddenly appears. Recently profiled as LA's own Greenwich Village in Vanity Fair magazine, Silverlake is a small neighborhood that roughly borders Hollywood and Downtown LA. Once a predominantly working class Hispanic community, Silverlake has seen the rise of boutique shops, gourmet health food stores, French bistros and yoga facilities just in the past few years. And now that Indie Rock heroes such as Elliott Smith, Lou Barlow and Beck have settled in, it was only a matter of time before the Indie Film world would follow.
