(Jun 10, 2005) The Human Rights Watch International Film Festival Looks Inward to the U.S. as well as Overseas for 16th Edition
Many of us used to feel that films about human rights were more often than not about "them," victims of abuse in foreign climes with whom we might empathize but feel little kinship. What did they have to do with our relatively secure lives in the States? Events following September 11 have brought human rights abuse not just closer to home, but home. Twisted and manipulated, the tragedy provided the rationale for the neo-con dream of invading Iraq, stockpiling right-wingers in judicial and other posts, detentions without charge, and torture and homicide in Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and even worse facilities provided by less restrained foreign powers. Howard Feinstein takes a look at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival, currently underway in New York.

(Jun 03, 2005) One Month, 120 Film Fest Days: A Guide to June's U.S. Festival Frenzy
Nearly every single day this month a notable film festival is underway somewhere in the United States. Over the years June has emerged as a key festival month, welcoming international events in big cities like Seattle and Los Angeles, queer fests in San Francisco and New York, a solid southern event in Atlanta, and numerous weekend festivals in resort towns like Nantucket, Newport and Provincetown. That's more than 120 film festival days packed into just one month. Eugene Hernandez reports on a busy month for fests.
