This year lasting 25 days and showcasing over 230 full-length films (55 of which are documentaries) plus 110 shorts, it's no wonder why SIFF is always a haven for cinemaphiles. Thank heavens then that Seattle is overpopulated with flick fanatics who adore a challenge. Even experimental, esoteric and extremely trashy films will garner a warm embrace here. The 31st Seattle International Film Festival closed Sunday night in Washington State with the North American premiere of Gus Van Sant's "Last Days" and the presentation of this year's awards. Ilya khrzhanovsky's, from Russia, won the Grand Jury Prize for Best New Director at this year's festival for the film "4" and Doug Sadler won the Grand Jury Prize for best New American Film for "Swimmers," while Walter Stokman's "Based on a True Story" won the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary.
