NEWFEST '08 | 20th Anniversary Marked With 250 Films, New Additions

The New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Film Festival (NewFest) announced the program of films and events for its 20th annual edition. The line-up features nearly 250 films, representing over 30 countries, and including 49 New York Premieres, 14 U.S. Premieres and 8 World Premieres. "Each year we try to make NewFest bigger and better than the last one," Basil Tsiokos, Artistic Director of NewFest in a statement. Among the new additions is NewDraft Screenplay Competition & Reading Series, which is discovering and fostering LGBT features screenwriters and their screenplays.

CineVegas '08 | "Rocker," "Howard" and Debuts Crown 10th CineVegas Fest

The world premiere of Peter Cattaneo's "The Rocker," starring Rainn Wilson as a failed drunmmer who joins his nephew's high school band, will open the 10th annual CineVegas Film Festival, taking place in Las Vegas June 12 - 21. Among this year's debuts are seven world premieres the festival has packaged in its "Jackpot Premieres" section (listed below) in addition to the festival's documentary section (including three world debuts), a sidebar on Mexican films and directors as well as high profile work that have been making the festival rounds and more. Closing the festival is Sean McGinly's "The Great Buck Howard," starring John Malkovich, Colin Hanks, Emily Blunt and Tom Hanks.

LAFF '08 | Universal Pics "Wanted and "Hellboy II" Bookend Los Angeles Fest in June

Universal Pictures' "Wanted" by Timur Bekmambetov will open the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival June 19 in Westwood, organizers announced Tuesday. Based upon Mark Millar's graphic novel series the film tells the story of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. Closing the festival, which is organized by Film Independent, is writer/director Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" also from Universal on June 29. Sundance 2008 doc "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" will screen as the Centerpiece June 26 at the Ford Amphitheater in a program that will include live musical performances and "special guests." "I am proud of the festival's on-going growth within the community, and pleased that we continue to attract world-class filmmakers like Guillermo Del Toro and Timur Bekmambetov," said festival director Rich Raddon in a statement. "The Los Angeles Film Festival celebrates the best in filmmaking as well as discovering new voices from around the world."

EVENTS | "American Teen" to Open Sundance at BAM Series; 22 Features Slated

Twenty-two feature films and 36 shorts including dramatic winner "Frozen River" and doc winner "Trouble the Water" from January's Sundance Film Festival will screen at the third annual Sundance Institute at BAM series taking place May 29 - June 8, the Sundance Institute and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) unveiled Wednesday. Kicking off the event is the New York debut of "American Teen," which won the 2008 Sundance documentary directing award for Nanette Burstein as well as the audience prize for best doc.

ND/NF '08 | "Frozen River" to Open 37th New Directors/New Films; International Titles Abound

The 37th New Directors/New Films will open with Courtney Hunt's debut feature, "Frozen River," at The Museum of Modern Art, Wednesday, March 26. This year's edition includes 26 features and six shorts as well as an HBO Films roundtable. Starring Melissa Leo and Misty Upham in the story of two women who become unwilling partners in a perilous crime, "Frozen River" won the Grand Jury prize for dramatic feature at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival in January. Curated by MoMA and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, ND/NF has long been considered a premier event spotlighting emerging talent. Other festival prize-winning titles joining this year's event include Cannes Camera d'Or winner "Jellyfish" by Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen as well as Lance Hammer's "Ballast," which took both the directors and cinematography nods for Lol Crawley at Sundance. Other Sundance titles include Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's exploration of post-Katrina New Orleans in "Trouble the Water" (best doc winner) and Daniel Robin's "my olympic summer" (best short). In all, work from 17 countries are on tap for the series taking place in New York March 26 - April 6.

FESTIVALS | Rendez-Vous Unveils 13th French Run Across the Pond

Fifteen films will screen as U.S. or New York debuts at the 13th Rendez-Vous with French Cinema series hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance February 29 through March 9. As previously announced, Oscar-winner Claude Lelouch's thriller "Roman de gare" will launch the popular event at the Walter Reade Theater. Fanny Ardant stars in the films as a best-selling author researching her next crime story. Other veteran French filmmakers making their return this year include Cedric Klapisch ("L'Auberge Espagnole") with "Paris," described as "an emotional tour of the city through the eyes of a man waiting for a heart transplant, starring Romain Duris and Juliette Binoche.

FESTIVALS | World Premieres and Dozens of Oscar Contenders on Tap for 19th Palm Springs Fest

A roster of 222 films from 66 countries are on tap for the 19th Palm Springs International Film Festival, including 69 premieres (4 World, 40 U.S. and 25 North American) in addition to 55 of the 63 films submitted for best foreign language Oscar consideration. As previously announced, Helen Hunt's U.S. debut "Then She Found Me" will open the festival taking place in the California desert community January 3 - 14. Romantic comedy "Priceless" by French director Pierre Salvadori, starring Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh will close the festival January 13.

ROTTERDAM '08 | Kiarostami, Fiennes, Puiu and Panahi Projects in Upcoming 25th Cinemart

Thirty-nine projects have been selected to participate in CineMart, the co-production market taking place January 27 - 31, which coincides with the 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam. This year's 25th CineMart, which focuses on low and medium budget films, includes projects by Abbas Kiarostami, Sophie Fiennes, Cristi Puiu, Jafar Panahi and Alex van Warmerdam. "The aim for the selection of the 25th anniversary of CineMart was a more focused and selective line up of projects," commented CineMart manager Marit van den Elshout in a statement. "In order to give each project the exclusivity it deserves, we have brought down the number of projects to below 40 projects. Considering the fact that a record number of applications was received this year, this meant an even more difficult selection process."

PARK CITY '08 | First Timers, Personal Films Dominate Sundance' 08 Slate; Fest Unveils Competition Rosters

While the dramatic competition lineup for the 2008 Sundance Film Festival includes a few familiar names, such as the return to Park City by "Half Nelson" filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden or the new film from "All the Boys Love Mandy Lane" director Jonathan Levine, and even an American feature by "Rain" director Christine Jeffs, the roster of American independent features is dominated by first timers. There are 51 first time filmmakers among the lineup of 121 features that will screen at Sundance this year, running January 17 - 27, 2008, in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah. "It's surprising the number of things that just popped out of nowhere," Sundance Film Festival director Geoff Gilmore told indieWIRE this afternoon.

FESTIVALS | Local Filmmaker's "It's Hard to Be Nice" Opening 13th Sarajevo Film Festival; Fest Spotlights Int'l Fare

Local filmmaker Srdan Vuletic's "It's Hard to be Nice" is opening the 13th Sarajevo Film Festival this Friday, August 17, kicking off the event which continues in the capital of the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina through August 25. The Eastern European-heavy festival are also slated to host filmmakers Michael Moore and Terry George in addition to gala screenings for Cannes '07 Palme d'Or winner "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" by Romanian Cristian Mungiu as well as Austrian director Ulrich Seidl's "Import Export."

TORONTO '07 | Conflicts and Character in the Spotlight as TIFF Unveils Doc Slate

The Toronto International Film Festival unveiled this year's full documentary line up for its Real to Reel section, describing the roster as "politically engaged work and in-depth character studies." Thirteen American docs join this year's list of 20 Real to Reel films in addition to two U.S. and overseas co-productions. Conflicts past and present with an emphasis on the Muslim world are among this year's major themes, including a look back at the Algeria's conflict with France for independence in Jean-Pierre Lledo's "Algerrie, Histories a Ne Pas Dire," while Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro's "Body of War" gives a personal account of the war in Iraq. Other notable titles in this year's doc line up include Werner Herzog's look at Antarctica in "Encounters at the End of the World," "The Last King of Scotland" director Kevin Macdonald's "My Enemy's Enemy," "A Jihad for Love" by newcomer Parvez Sharma and Amir Bar-Lev's Sundance debut "My Kid Could Paint That." TIFF takes place in Canada's largest city September 6 - 15.

TORONTO '07 | "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" Set for 32nd TIFF; Fest Names 32 Films for '07 Event

Shekhar Kapur's "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" will premiere as a Gala Presentation at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival, organizers have announced. Reprising the roles they originated in seven-time Academy Award-nominated "Elizabeth," Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush star in the historical thriller. Queen Elizabeth I (Academy Award-winner Blanchett) faces bloodlust for her throne and familial betrayal in this installment. Growing keenly aware of the changing religious and political tides of late 16th century Europe, Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish King Philip II (Jordi Molla)--with his powerful army and sea-dominating armada--determined to restore England to Catholicism. In addition to the second installment of "Elizabeth," Toronto has also announced 32 international selections that have screened at festivals globally, set for this year's TIFF, taking place September 6 - 15.

"Golden Door" Opens a Golden San Francisco International Film Festival

The San Francisco International Film Festival announced a robust lineup for the festival's 50th edition during a press conference Tuesday at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, with 200 films on the roster from 54 countries, and awards in more than 13 categories showing at a variety of locations, but centered at the new Sundance Cinemas Kabuki. As described by San Francisco Film Society executive director Graham Leggat, director of programming Linda Blackaby, and programming associates Sean Uyehara and Rod Armstrong, the festival kicks off April 26th with a screening of Emanuele Crialese's Venice award-winning "Golden Door," followed by a party in San Francisco's City Hall.

"The Namesake" Opens Cinequest; Fest Touts Film Distribution Scheme

Director Mira Nair's latest, "The Namesake" opens the 2007 Cinequest Film Festival Wednesday night in San Jose, CA, launching the 11-day event. This year's lineup includes 14 films screening in Cinequest's Maverick narrative competition, while 13 are on tap for the doc competition. In addition to a shorts competition, the festival includes spotlights on the Balkans, Latino and Asian cinema as well as its "New Visions" line up and special presentations.

Shelly's "Waitress" to Open 13th US Comedy Arts Festival Wednesday

Thirty features including three world premieres, two North American debuts and twenty shorts are on tap for the 13th installment of the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, which will open with 2007 Sundance film, "Waitress," by the late Adrienne Shelly this Wednesday. The film is Shelly's second at USCAF. In 2000, her film "I'll Take You There" won best director. Fox Searchlight acquired the film at Sundance where her husband Andrew Ostroy announced the creation of the "Adrienne Shelly Foundation" to support the efforts of women writers and directors.

"Martin Frost" and "Glue" to Open 36th New Directors/New Film Series

Novelist/director Paul Auster's "The Inner Life of Martin Frost" will open the 36th New Directors/New Films series slated for March 21 - April 1 with screenings at MoMA's Titus 1 Theater and Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater. Argentine director Alexis Dos Santos' "Glue" will be the second opener for the series, one of three on offer from the South American country in the series out of a total roster of 26 feature length films and six shorts. Also on tap this year is Sundance grand jury winner "Padre Nuestro" by Christopher Zalla.

SXSW '07 | 61 World Premieres Set for 2007 Fest in Austin; Frank's "The Lookout" Opens March Event

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival unveiled the feature lineup for its upcoming 14th edition, with 110 films slated for the fest's diverse sections over nine days. The increasingly important U.S. film festival and conference precedes the popular SXSW Music gathering in Austin, but continues throughout the music industry event. This year's film roster includes 61 world, nine North American and seven U.S. premieres screening at the fest, taking place March 9 - 17 in Austin, Texas. As previously announced, SXSW's film event will open with the world debut of Scott Frank's "The Lookout."

"Black Book" and "The Heart of the Earth" to Bookend 24th Miami Film Fest

Details of the 24th Miami International Film Festival have been revealed with 112 films slated for this year's roster, including 92 features and 20 shorts. Opening this year's edition is director Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book," while the awards climax will be a screening of "Ira & Abby" by Robert Cary and "The Heart of the Earth" by Antonio Cuadri will close the festival, which will take place March 2 -11. This year's slate will include seven world, 32 international, North American and U.S. premieres as well as 45 East Coast debuts. The festival also announced that this will be the final year for festival director Nicole Guillemet, who has served as MIFF festival director since 2002 following her departure as co-director of the Sundance Film Festival.

3rd Dubai Fest Set with "Bobby" Debut; Competition Showcases New Arab Cinema

Now in its third year, the 2006 Dubai International Film Festival opened Sunday in the United Arab Emirates with Emilio Estevez's latest, "Bobby." The program for the event includes a mix of international titles from the West, alongside new Arabic titles from the Gulf States, as well as movies from The Levant and North Africa, according to organizers. A total of 115 movies from 47 countries are on tap for the festival, opening Sunday night (December 14th) and running through December 17th.

"Paul Weller: Into Tomorrow" Opens 13th Sheffield Docfest

"Paul Weller: Into Tomorrow" opened the 13th edition of the Sheffield Documentary Festival Monday night, ushering in a program of 93 films from 23 countries, including nine world and 24 U.K. premieres. "Paul Weller" features the music icon telling much of his own life story and contains interviews with his parents as well as Steve Brookes and Bruce Foxton of The Jam, Boy George and Noel Gallagher.
