    Janie Jones Promo Headline

Janie Jones is a heartwarming father daughter story. It is inspired by the true story of writer/director David Rosenthal about the introduction of a father to the teenage daughter he never knew he had. Abigail Breslin, who is officially no longer a kid, plays the teen who has lived her life with her...

My friend Gary Meyer recently sent me some images from an Oakland, California magic journal of the 1940s and 50s that I’m pleased to share with you, in the hope that they may stoke some happy memories. If you want to see more of these—even on t-shirts—click HERE. (Long ago, at a Halloween Saturday matinee in Paramus, New Jersey, the thea...

REVIEW | "The Last Rites of Joe May" is a Clichéd Drama, But It Works

Dennis Farina's washed-up hustler in "The Last Rites of Joe May" is designed in the mold of a classic movie star tough guy, but the veteran character actor's performance also serves to disassemble that same archetype. Freed from a Chicago hospital after a bout with pneumonia, ...

The 13 Best Recent Indie Horror Movies to Watch at Home on Halloween

Scary movies don't deserve recognition only at the end of October, but we're grateful for this dubious American holiday in that it always confers instant legitimacy -- however briefly -- on a genre too often dismissed. Of course, studios love to take advantage of Halloween with the latest installmen...

    Puss In Boots—movie review

Just when you were about to give up on 3-D—and the inflated price of admission to watch it on a theater screen—along comes a film that’s worth the money. In fact, it isn’t the story that makes Puss in Boots stand out, but the imaginative staging, especially in 3-D.

    In Time—movie review

Writer and sometimes-director Andrew Niccol fixates on the future and doesn’t offer a sunny outlook, whether it’s in Gattaca, The Truman Show, or S1m0ne. It should come as no surprise, then, that In Time is yet another trip into the dystopian world of tomorrow, where lifespan has...

    Anonymous—movie review

There are great moments in Anonymous, from its arresting opening scene (with Derek Jacobi rushing into a Broadway theater and striding directly onstage) to recreations of the first performances ever given of Henry V and Hamlet before a spellbound throng of groundlings. I, too, was captivated...
