Weekend Preview: Give Thanks for 'Rust and Bone' & 'Life of Pi;' Plus 'Hitchcock,' 'Central Park Five' & 'Rise of the Guardians'

This holiday weekend there are multiple films to enjoy and one for almost everyone's taste. "Hitchcock" is an historical comedy/drama for cinephile nerds featuring the beloved Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren; "Life of Pi" is Ang Lee's epic adaptation of Yann Martel's...

Review: Mini-Budget Superhero Story 'Alter Egos' Falls Short Of Creating A Distinct Mythology

Kudos to those who want to establish their own superhero mythology in 2012. The storytelling has evolved beyond the echoes of Greek myth since Superman burst upon the scene in the 1930s, to the point where thousands of these characters have existed in multiple mediums. Filmgoers used to consider the...

Review: 'My Brother The Serial Killer' Offers Thin Alternate Theory About The O.J. Simpson/Nicole Brown Murder

Few court cases captured the public imagination in recent memory quite like the O.J. Simpson trial. An American football hero, part-time movie star and color commentator, a whole different side to his public persona came through when he was charged with murdering his ex-wife. And when the not guilty...

    Silver Linings Playbook

It’s rare to find a mainstream American movie that doesn’t rely on formula to some degree. That’s one reason David O. Russell’s 'Silver Linings Playbook' is so refreshing: we haven’t encountered these characters before, and this is a character-driven piece. They’re unpredictable and idiosyncratic, b...

'Life of Pi' Review: Ang Lee's Gorgeous Adaptation is Stunning 3-D Triumph

Is it possible for a wild animal to love a human being? And vice versa? At a time in the world when religion can be so devisive, Martel's story of a Hindu/Christian/Muslim who is the sole human survivor of an ocean shipwreck reminds that film can both heal and inspire. But it is also a stunning tech...

Review: ‘Hitchcock’ A Breezy, Disposable Effort Saved By Anthony Hopkins & Helen Mirren’s Dedicated Performances

Hypnotic, beautiful, and perilous in equal measure – one needn’t glance anywhere else but at the leading ladies of Alfred Hitchcock’s films to garner their intense influence. Yet as dramatized in “Anvil!” director Sacha Gervasi’s loving biopic, “Hitchcock,” the real authority lingered off the set at...

Review: Spike Lee's 'Bad 25' A Comprehensive & Warm Look At The Making Of Michael Jackson's Album

A couple of years ago, before he set up his low-budget comeback film “Red Hook Summer," Spike Lee was planning another NYC-set project, “Brooklyn Loves MJ,” with the story taking place on the night of the death of pop superstar Michael Jackson in June 2009. Said to star Samuel...

Criticwire Picks: 'Rust and Bone,' 'Bad 25' and 'Central Park Five' Top a Crowded Holiday Weekend

Another literary adaptation tops this week's new releases, but a pair of Thanksgiving Day documentaries tie in second place.

    Life Of Pi

A book that many people considered unfilmable has inspired one of the year’s most riveting and rewarding movies. I don’t like using hype words, but I found 'Life of Pi' truly magical. I’m even enthusiastic about its use of 3-D, which seems organic and genuinely enhances the film.
