movie review: The Hangover, Part II

Unless moviegoers themselves are willing to shoulder some of the blame, it’s useless to try and figure out why The Hangover Part II is so bad. The film only exists because, after the hilarious 2009 movie broke box-office records for an R-rated comedy, its studio demanded a sequel. And if th...

It also becomes our second critic's pick of the week (in a row, n...

Andrei Zvyaguintsev starts and ends his third feature, "Elena," with the symbolic image of a barren tree, an accurate reflection of the dreary narrative sandwiched between those two shots. All three of the Russian director's features - alongside "Elena," he directed "The Return" and "The Banishment" - deal with troubled family life.
