In Theaters: 'The Rum Diary' Hopes To Drink 'In Time' & 'Puss In Boots' Under The Table

Um, WHAT? There is no horror movie opening this weekend. WHO WILL FILL THE SAW VOID??? I know we got “Paranormal Activity 3” last weekend, but it is decidedly abnormal for no big budget horror to be opening on October goddamn 28th. Are we on the decline of a cycle? Is everyone getting their yayas out at those horrible haunted house places? Think piece coming soon! In the meantime, check out our foreign horror feature for all your cinematic creepy crawlies. And, if you’re not in the Halloween spirit, here are some other films for you to enjoy: the long awaited “The Rum Diary”! “Puss in Boots,” for the children. And time as money movie “In Time...

Review: '13' Remake Proves To Be One Unlucky Number (To Put It Mildly)

It’s unfortunate, but there’s a Movie Content Hierarchy. Great filmmakers don’t pretend this exists -- Darren Aronofsky makes a horror movie and genre-hating critics love it, and former Fangoria mainstay David Cronenberg maintains his integrity and themes of perversion and body modification while becoming a boutique festival filmmaker. But more often than not, directors, screenwriter and producers are beholden to the unimaginative thought of “this is how it is meant to be done.” More specifically, films from other parts of the world, particularly smaller ones, have their own vocabulary, their own rhythms and idiosyncrasies. Gela Babluani’s “1...

Watch: Terrible Trailer For '13' Even Makes Michael Shannon Look Bad

Sometimes things just don't go according to plan. Director Géla Babluani seemed to be on the cuSp of great things after his “13 Tzameti” won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 2006. Not bad for a movie that was pretty overrated and kind of ridiculous to begin with. As these things tend to go, Hollywood came calling and a remake with a first-rate cast was promptly ordered up with Babluani at the helm. And then things went disastrously wrong. It was yanked from the 2010 SXSW festival before its U.S. premiere (rumored to be because of in-fighting on the final cut between the director and producers) and has sat around on a shelf for nearly two year...

'13' Finally Sees The Light Of Day, Picked Up For Distribution By Anchor Bay

"13 Tzameti," 2006's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner, is a clipped, tight and exciting piece of genre filmmaking. Gela Babluani's directorial debut concerns a layman who accepts a mysterious envelope meant for another man, only to learn that the payday promised therein forces him to participate in a Russian Roulette tournament. The film is stark, black and white, and French, a minor minimalist masterpiece that lingers in your head for days afterwards. If we told you Babluani remade his own film in color with American money and huge Hollywood stars, would you not believe that it was probably terrible? And would that pessimism be highlighted b...

Mickey Rourke Says 'Passion Play' & '13' Are "Terrible," Takes Back Nice Words About Megan Fox

Did someone forget to butter Mickey Rourke's popcorn at the "Scream 4" premiere last night? Or was he as disappointed as we were in the lacklustre horror sequel? Who knows, but when chatting with Vulture at the after-party, the actor decided to dispense with Hollywood courtesies and drop some truth ...

Trailer & Poster For '13' Remake Starring Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, 50 Cent & More

Géla Babluani's English language remake of his own wildly overrated, but cult adored "13 Tzameti" has already begun opening overseas but is still without a release date on this side of the ocean and there is probably a good reason. It looks terrible.
