This week on DVD/Blu-ray: Lynn Shelton's latest acclaimed ensemble comedy; a horror film that creeped out Park City earlier this year; the epic doc trilogy that came before "West of Memphis"; the third entry in the popular Spanish "[REC]" series; and an all-star film adaptati...

In Theaters: 'Celeste And Jesse' May Be A Romantic 'Total Recall' That Will Cause You To '360'

Hey hey hey! The dog days of August are upon us, which means summer is both at its peak (temperature-wise) and nigh complete (vacation time-wise). There are just a few more weeks to squeeze in those action-packed, costume-rife, voice-modulator-studded blockbusters – at least until Christmas – so let...

Watch: New Clips From William Friedkin's 'Killer Joe' & Fernando Meirelles' '360'

Our own Oliver Lyttleton saw “Killer Joe” last year in Venice and was impressed enough to award the film with a B+ rating. After its U.K. release last weekend this writer was able to catch the film and was similarly impressed, so it’s with a great deal of enthusiasm that we are abl...

Magnolia Will Take On Fernando Meirelles’ '360' But Don't Expect An Awards Season Push

One of the bigger disappointments of the festival season this fall was Fernando Meirelles' "360." The drama boasts a terrific ensemble including Rachel Weisz, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins and Ben Foster, in a retelling of the classic Arthur Schnitzler play “Reigen” that chronicles the simple decision by one man to remain faithful to his wife and how it creates a ripple effect on various people worldwide, opening a window into modern relationships. But unfortunately, the promising concept failed to deliver, with the movie premiering at TIFF to mostly lukewarm reviews from audiences and critics alike. It wasn't immediately picked up in Toronto, bu...

Watch: First Clip From Fernando Meirelles’ '360' Starring Anthony Hopkins

Unfortunately, Fernando Meirelles’ "360" had a rough premiere at TIFF just a couple of weeks back. Technical glitches delayed the single press screening by more than an hour, which caused scheduling problems for many people, who had to bail on seeing the picture. And at the splashy red carpet event for the movie, screenwriter Peter Morgan reportedly bailed on the Q&A, infuriated by the sound problems during the screening. When the reviews finally came back, the response from both critics and audiences were muted at best. Well, here's hoping things go a bit more smoothly for the film when it opens the BFI London Film Festival next month, and f...

TIFF '11 Review: Fernando Meirelles' International Love Story '360' May Leave His Fans Heartbroken

In a photo studio in Vienna, a sleazy photographer (Johannes Krisch) is coaxing a young Slovakian woman Mirkha (Lucia Siposová) into posing for her first nude pictures. We soon find out this man is also a pimp and the pictures are for luring clients on the internet. Her younger sister Anna (Gabriela Marcinkova) tries to persuade her to reconsider but she has her mind made up. She needs the money and wants to change her life. Her sister intones through darkly humorous voiceover “If there’s a fork in the road, take it.” It’s a highly provocative opening for what ends up being just a so-so anthology of interweaving tales, even though director Fe...
