Warner Bros. Aiming For February/March 2012 Start On 'Akira,' Garrett Hedlund Frontrunner To Star

After some minor drama, which saw long-attached helmer Albert Hughes bail on the gestating "Akira" remake this spring, the project came back to the life in the middle of the summer when "Unknown" and "Orphan" director Jaume Collet-Serra came aboard. Things then went quiet on the project, but once ag...

'Unknown' Director Jaume Collet-Serra Eyes 'Akira'; Budget Scaled Back To $90 Million

Well, that's funny. Just last night we reported that indie filmmakers The Polish Brothers were offered, and turned down, the chance to direct Warner Bros.' potential franchise "Akira," marking the first real word on the project ever since Albert Hughes bailed on the film at the end of May. Well, if ...

The Polish Brothers Turned Down The Opportunity To Direct 'Akira'

One of the most interesting things about Warner Bros.' gestating "Akira" is that ever since director Albert Hughes bailed on the film at the end of May, there hasn't been a word about it. No shortlist of directors, no new names being tossed around for the lead. Nothing. Which is what makes this next...

Albert Hughes Sees The Writing On The Wall, Bails On 'Akira'

Studio Keeping Film On The Fast Track, Going Back To Young Actors To Fill The Roles Of Kaneda & TetsuoSometimes a pipe is a pipe, and in the case of Warner Bros. "Akira," a messy production is just that. After failing to land Keanu Reeves and with the top shelf blockbuster still sputtering to get st...

Uh-Oh: Keanu Reeves Passes On 'Akira'; Is The Film In Serious Trouble?

Possible Cancellation of Project Devastates... Oh Right, Nobody Pretty much ever since its U.S. release in 1988, someone, somewhere has wanted to do an Americanized remake of "Akira." Sony was close to picking it up in the 1990s, and Warner Bros has had the rights for the best part of a decade now,...

Keanu Reeves To Get The $230 Million 'Akira' Off The Ground?

After every young white boy in Hollywood was shortlisted for "Akira" -- Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy for Tetsuo and Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake and Joaquin Phoenix for Kaneda -- Warner Bros. suddenly seemed to realize they needed a big-nam...

Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender & More Sought For 'Akira'

Garrett Hedlund, Chris Pine, Justin Timberlake & Joaquin Phoenix Also In The MixThe long-gestating "Akira" remake seems to have been knocking around for awhile now and to Warner Bros' credit, they are trying to get it as right as possible before moving this thing forward. With most fans outright skeptical of how the studio is going to change the wild, decidedly not mainstream manga into a broadly appealing, PG-13 two-film franchise, last month the studio brought in the big guns which -- for better or worse -- point in the direction they're headed. Steve Kloves, who has penned seven of the eight ‘Harry Potter’ movies, was tasked with polishing...

'Harry Potter' Scribe Steve Kloves To Take A Pen To 'Akira'

So, are you still hoping that Warner Bros.' remake/adaptation of the seminal "Akira" won't have its edges rounded off for mainstream consumption? You might want to hold that thought.

Morgan Freeman Circling 'Akira,' Zac Efron Offered Lead Role

Steam is beginning to build around Warner Bros. remake of the classic anime "Akira" with some interesting names being thrown around. But first a quick history recap: In February of this year, directing duo Allen and Albert Hughes were brought on to direct the film and this summer, Albert Torres ("Henry Poole Is Here") was hired to pen a new draft of the script with a due date of September. The project will be a two-film, PG-13 adaptation of the manga with the Hughes Brothers currently only on board for the first section which will bring books 1-3 of the series to the big screen. And it now looks like all systems are go as casting is tentative...
