Review: Cross-Dressing 'Albert Nobbs' A Stodgily Straight Drama

For Glenn Close, "Albert Nobbs" has been a long time coming for its big screen incarnation. Based on a short story by Irish author George Moore, it was first adapted into an off-Broadway production by Simone Benmussa with Close in the lead role that won her an Obie award. The actress has been a driv...

'The Help' & 'The Artist' Lead The Field At Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations

In the seventeen years that they've been running for, the annual Screen Actors' Guild Awards have proven to be a pretty reliable precursor for the acting categories at the Academy Awards. And why shouldn't they? With the actors who nominate their peers for the Oscars overwhelmingly being...

Trailer: Glenn Close Cross-Dresses In Tonally Odd 'Albert Nobbs' Trailer

Isn't this supposed to be a drama? It's hard to tell from the goofy first half of this trailer, which feels like some lighthearted British comedy. Directed by Rodrigo García (”Mother & Child,” “Nine Lives”), "Albert Nobbs" is a tale of a struggling, penniless woman who has to pose as a man so she can work as a butler in Dublin's most posh hotel in 19th century Ireland. A passion project by producer and star Glenn Close, the film started out as a short story by Irish author George Moore and was first adapted into an off-Broadway production by Simone Benmussa. It's been a long time coming for this film as Close starred in that version back in 1...

Watch: Spoilery New Clip From 'Albert Nobbs' Gives A Peek At Janet McTeer's Great Performance

Before "Albert Nobbs" even played Telluride or TIFF, the word on the street was that Glenn Close was an early Oscar favorite thanks to her turn in the film, an adaptation of a stage play for which she won an Obie award back in 1982. The actress had been shepherding the project along for years, and finally had it realized with a cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Brendan Gleeson and in a very brief role Jonathan Rhys Meyers. And while our man in Telluride was enamored with the film, this writer caught up with it in Toronto and was far less enthused. And while Close is fine in the titular lead role, if restrained in what is an al...

The Return Of Whit Stillman, 'Twixt,' Brad Pitt's 'Moneyball' & More: Midway Check-In With TIFF 2011

Running from September 8-18, we're essentially at the midway check-in point of the Toronto International Film Festival. Keeping up with all of the reviews is nuts, hell keeping up with our own reviews is taxing.

TIFF '11 Review: Cross-Dressing 'Albert Nobbs' A Stodgily Straight Drama

For Glenn Close, "Albert Nobbs" has been a long time coming for its big screen incarnation. Based on a short story by Irish author George Moore, it was first adapted into an off-Broadway production by Simone Benmussa with Close in the lead role that won her an Obie award. The actress has been a driving force behind the film adaptation, shepherding the project for 15 years, taking on the responsibilities of a producer and even co-writing the script with Man Booker prize-winning author John Banville and Gabriella Prekop. So yes, it's passion project for Close and it's unfortunate that none of that enthusiasm manages to find its way to the big s...
