The Amazing Race: Our Predictions For The 2012 Spirit Awards

This weekend isn't just about the Oscars, for the record. Saturday night, as is traditional, sees the warm-up for the big show with the 2012 Spirit Awards, Film Independent's antidote to the Academy Awards, intended to honor the best of independent cinema. With recent winners of the top prize includ...

    Dog Wars: Scorsese Defends Blackie

I’m not a dog person, so I don’t really have an animal in this fight. But I have to agree with the Uggie backlash, which took off when Christopher Plummer pointed out – quite rightly I think – that Cosmo from Beginners is a much cuter dog. Now Martin Scorsese is getting into ...

My Favorite Films Of 2011 - Rodrigo Perez

Topping my list of 2011’s #1stworldproblems was making a top 10 list. Such is the difficult life of having to see movies for free and then attempt to express something insightful about them. I have the same issue every year: feeling zero motivation to write a top 10 list and then of course, al...

    Ewan McGregor In Perfect Sense

Perfect Sense is one of those clever, minor, almost-good films saved by Ewan McGregor. (It’s kind of shocking how many there are: how about Rogue Trader, Stay and I Love You Phillip Morris for starters?) This one is a too self-consciously poetic yet more ambitious variation on Contagion, with ...

My Favorite Films Of 2011: Kevin Jagernauth

The annual top ten list is pretty much an exercise in futility to some degree. With a race to cram in as many movies as possible as the clock on the year winds down (and let it be said, I didn't get to see everything I would have wanted to) combined with the added duty of then ranking them, it&#...

My Favorite Films Of 2011: Oliver Lyttelton

I'd have called you a liar if you'd said this six months ago, but 2011 turned out to be a pretty strong year for cinema. Indeed, whereas I've had to make up the numbers more than once in recent years, this time around, I've actually expanded it to fifteen to include everything I real...

The Best Dog Of The Year Performance: Arthur From 'Beginners'

The first in a line of many dog performances hit for us in March of this year at SXSW, but there’s been avid debate (for some reason) about which performance deserves some sort of award (or treat).

Drew Taylor's Favorite Films Of 2011

2011 was undoubtedly the year of Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life." It just wasn't for me. After winning the Palme d'Or on the same day that I saw the movie, I was left feeling baffled. Like I had missed something.

    Best Films of 2011

If there were ever a year to be wimpy and declare a tie, this would have been it: choosing between my Number 1 and Number 2 films was just silly. One is big, the other smaller; both are ambitious and perfectly made, but in wildly different ways. I adore them both.

The Amazing Race: At The Mid-Point Of The Season, Who's Locked In And Who's Shut Out?

So here we are; the mid-point, roughly speaking, of the awards season. There's a long slog to go, it should be said, with a bit more than two months until the Academy Awards themselves.
