Wim Wenders' 'Pina,' 'Buck,' 'Paradise Lost 3,' 'Project Nim' & More Make Oscar Documentary Shortlist

...and then there were 15. Just like that, the field for the films battling for the five slots at the Oscars for Best Documentary just got a lot smaller. The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the shortlist for the award and once again, there is no love for Werner Herzog.

Weekend Box Office: 'Cars 2' Continues Pixar Formula, 'Green Lantern' Plummets

The numbers on “Cars 2” don’t actually matter, except for the stat-hounds regularly following the weekly box office noise (us!). “Cars 2” exists to facilitate Disney’s biggest merchandising cash cow, a multi-billion (annually!) property that needs no further justification. As Pixar seems like a stud...

Weekend Box-Office: Is 'Green Lantern' The End Of The Superhero Gravy Train?

Perspective is necessary. $53 million is a whole lotta money. $53 million could buy several houses, it could feed many people, it could save lives. $53 million is also a pretty good opening for a somewhat higher-budgeted film, provided advertising isn’t through the roof and there aren’t a massive am...

In Theaters: 'Green Lantern' Takes On 'Popper's Penguins'

Hello darlings. Please be patient with me today. I have decided to take "Green Lantern" as a personal affront to my being a grown ass woman with a need for grown ass movies. I just can't anymore with this childishness! Adolescent boys are ruling the world, and it's never more apparent than when examining the steaming piles of CGI comic book hash we get served up every summer. And you know, I'll take an "X-Men: First Class" or a "Captain America." At least these enhanced beings are located in a world that is rooted in some kind of reality with real stories and real problems (Nazis!). Even just reading our review of "Green Lantern" confused me ...

10 Things We Learned About 'Buck' From Director Cindy Meehl & Buck Brannaman Himself

We saw the forthcoming documentary "Buck" back at SXSW, and thought it was pretty great. The film chronicles the true life story of Buck Brannaman, the man who inspired the Nicholas Evans novel "The Horse Whisperer" and later the Robert Redford film of the same name (where Buck served as a consultant). It's both an incredibly personal story of a man who overcame the psychic scars of his childhood to do something truly valuable, and a quietly mystical western, with sweeping vistas and high drama. But front and center of the film stands Buck, the kind of character you just can't make up, whose expertise with horses and insights on life, have al...

Sundance '11: 'Like Crazy' & 'How To Die In Oregon' Win Grand Jury Prizes

'Circumstance' & 'Buck' Win Audience AwardsSundance officially closes tomorrow, but tonight the awards were handed out in grand fashion in ceremonies presided over by Tim Blake Nelson, who arrived dressed up as a snowflake. While there were a number of strong films competing this year in the U.S. Dramatic Competition including "Homework," "Take Shelter," "Pariah," and "Martha Marcy May Marlene," it was Drake Doremus' tale of long distance love "Like Crazy" that grabbed the Grand Jury Prize. The film, which has earned a string of positive notices out of the festival (including one from our man on the ground James Rocchi), also snagged a Specia...

Sundance '11: IFC Goes On 'The Ledge'; Sundance Selects Gets 'Buck'; Fox Searchlight Does 'Homework'

Yep, more acquistions and if these stories seem dry as toast, bear in mind, these are the films that have risen to the top of the Sundance heap and will be trying to take that buzz beyond Park City.
