R.I.P. Producer, Screenwriter & Art Director Polly Platt (1939-2011)

Sad news broke late yesterday, with the announcement of the death of the film producer, writer and art director Polly Platt, who passed away of Lou Gehrig's disease at the age of 72. Platt's contribution to cinema has been greatly undervalued over the years, but she was someone with a diverse skill-...

When Celebrated Directors Lose The Plot: Interesting Left Turns And Failures In An Auteur's Oeuvre

Even the greatest of auteurs in cinema generally take one or two big missteps in their careers, either early on -- as happened to a lot of the Easy Riders/Raging Bulls generation of American filmmakers, bringing their hirsute hubris down to earth with a bump -- or later, when poor judgement and a degree of fossilisation can cloud a director’s vision -- see Quentin Tarantino’s remarks, for example, about not wanting to be a "geriatric" filmmaker, making films deep into his old age because this is when filmmakers generally lose their mojo, or Steven Soderbergh’s early retirement plans, which he hopes will see him...

Cameron Crowe Says 'We Bought A Zoo' Soundtrack Won't Necessarily Feature Neil Young Or Eddie Vedder

But Does Confirm It Will Likely Be Heavy On One Or Two ArtistsOne down, two to go. It's been a helluva busy year for director Cameron Crowe. He's already delivered one film, his Elton John documentary "The Union" and with five and a half months to go before the end of 2011, he will deliver two more movies. First, his long in the works Pearl Jam documentary "Pearl Jam Twenty" will premiere at the Venice Film Festival before hitting the "American Masters" series on PBS in October that will be followed by a DVD release. And then, just in time for the holidays, the director will drop his first feature film in six years, the dramedy "We Bought A Z...

Aline Brosh McKenna To Adapt Graphic Novel 'Rust' For 20th Century Fox

There are quite a few screenwriters that we here at The Playlist think are incredibly overrated. Someone like Allan Loeb ("21," "The Switch") comes to mind, but Aline Brosh McKenna wouldn't be far behind him. She's a rom-com writing star, penning films like "27 Dresses" and "Morning Glory," though s...

Cameron Crowe & Gus Van Sant Both Passed On Brian Epstein Biopic 'The Fifth Beatle'

Stage Musical & Graphic Novel Also In The WorksWait, this is a story about who isn't a directing a movie? And while that's a bit of reversal on the who's-joining-what-project news, when it's two names like this it's hard to ignore and its pretty damn interesting.

So after a five year absence, "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are returning with "He Loves Me Not," a whimsical-sounding project -- described as a mix of “Adaptation” and “Weird Science" -- written by actress Zoe Kazan that will star herself, her boyfriend Paul Dan...

Cameron Crowe's Elton John Documentary 'The Union' To Open The Tribeca Film Festival

It looks like Cameron Crowe has been working away on a film that we didn't really know anything about. Julien Temple To Direct Marvin Gaye Film 'Sexual Healing' Based On Comeback LP 'Midnight Love'

.This news may disappoint several people including Cameron Crowe. A long awaited Marvin Gaye biopic starring "Law & Order" star Jesse L. Martin called, "Sexual Healing," was set to begin shooting in April of 2008. Focusing on the last years of the soul singer's life, "Sopranos" actor (and producer on that version of the project) James Gandolfini was set to play Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert who helped Gaye back on his feet to record his comeback album, Midnight Love which spawned the monster hit, "Sexual Healing." Relatively untested director Lauren Goodman was set to direct, but April 2008 came and went and basically none of us heard a ...
