Marvel’s most patriotic superhero, Captain America, is finally getting his just due on the big screen after years of attempts and misfires like the corny 1990 release you’ve probably never heard of (count yourself lucky) featuring Matt Salinger in the red, white and blue man tights.
Read More »What started as a gag by director Jon Favreau on the first "Iron Man" film has become a signature part of all Marvel Studios films: the post-credits scene. During the filming of "Iron Man," Favreau threw in a few Easter eggs to the larger Marvel universe including a short scene after the end credits rolled featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, who shows up to tell Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark that he's putting a team together. This was an exciting tease to fanboys which should have led right into "The Avengers," Marvel's long-planned superhero team-up. Unfortunately this made "Iron Man 2" almost completely redundant, but that film's pos...
Read More »Paramount and Marvel clearly have high hopes and strong confidence in their forthcoming release of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” which hits screens July 22nd. They’ve already deployed screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to begin work on a sequel, which will most likely follo...
Read More »One the one hand, director Joe Johnston is a wild card. While he's celebrated for "The Rocketeer" he's also been behind stuff like "Jumanji" and "The Wolfman" so you're never quite sure who you're gonna get. On the other hand, "Captain America: The First Avenger" has a great lead in Chris Evans, a pretty solid supporting cast, and thus far evinces the perfect tone of loyalty to the comic and character, with a good dose of goofy charm to show that it's not taking itself too seriously. So you can see, we're a bit conflicted about the forthcoming superhero flick, arriving on the heels of three comic movies that have been good ("X-Men: First Clas...
Read More »'Captain America' Gets Terrible New PosterLet's rewind the clock a bit. Last summer, a rumor cropped up that Marvel had a plan to make live-action short films as a way to introduce the characters to audiences who may not be familiar with them — pretty much everyone who's not an avid comic book reader. The this bit info was notable, because just a few weeks earlier word was being knocked around that Marvel was planning to make lower budget movies centered around their second and their tier characters like Dr. Strange, Iron Fist, Ka-Zar, Power Pack & Luke Cage -- in essence, a short film introduction seemed like a good way to go to get mainstre...
Read More »It's been a bit of an uneven summer so far for comic book movies. "Thor" was a near campy, somewhat enjoyable romp that made tolerable popcorn entertainment but didn't exactly have us hankering for a sequel, either. "X-Men: First Class" had the scope and stakes not regularly seen in a comic movie, and buoyed by strong performances by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, it certainly elevated the genre but was not without some hard to ignore issues. And the less said about the godawful "Green Lantern," the better. So, can "Captain America: The First Avenger" top off the comic book summer with a bang? The newest trailer suggests the answer is: ...
Read More »No film studio gets into the comic book movie game without thinking "franchise." Pretty much every comic movie so far this year was preceded by sequel talk, even before they hit theaters. The filmmakers behind "X-Men: First Class" tossed around potential settings for a follow up; while much of any casting news regarding Ryan Reynolds over the past year seemed to be contingent on how quickly Warner Bros. would want a "Green Lantern 2" (judging by the numbers? Probably not so fast). And, "Captain America: The First Avenger" has already been talking sequel too. Earlier this spring Chris Evans dropped a little nugget that a second film would find...

Read More »Hey, "Captain America" is coming out! We have to confess we'd kind of forgotten about the film: Marvel and Paramount haven't yet been saturation marketing the flick in the same way that other superhero blockbusters have been ("X-Men First Class," you were pretty good, but there was really no need fo...
