Carter Burwell Scoring Todd Haynes' 'Carol' & Danny Elfman Bound To 'Fifty Shades Of Grey'

Although we have broadened our horizons somewhat, the intersection of music and film is something still very much important to us. To that end, we were very excited to hear news that two of our favorite composers would be tackling new projects.

Watch: 1.5 Hour Talk With Coen Brothers, Alec Baldwin & Carter Burwell About The Psychological Influence Of Movie Scores

It's an interesting approach to a subject: a celebrated actor, two venerable filmmaking siblings, a lauded composer and a neuroscientist exploring the uniquely powerful role of music in determining the narrative design and the emotional impact of a film. Yep, at the “Art Of The Score,” a co-presenta...

While earlier today we heard Benedict Cumberbatch's distinct voice frighten Bilbo in the new trailer for "The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug," in a couple weeks you'll be able not only to hear his melodious tones, but see his face too (under a platinum wig) in "The Fifth Estate," a.k.a. "The WikiLeaks...

Carter Burwell, Most Interesting Thing About 'Thor: The Dark World,' Quits 'Thor: The Dark World'

A month on from its first trailer, we're still not quite sure about Marvel's Phase Two offering, “Thor: The Dark World.” Alongside “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as a sequel that seems more logical than necessary, the new installment from “Game of Thrones” helmer Alan Taylor looks enjoyable e...

Charlie Kaufman To Co-Direct Animated 'Anomalisa,' Jennifer Jason Leigh & David Thewlis Among Voice Cast

It's funny how the complaints subside if a Kickstarter project is taken on by someone you like. For example: last summer screenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman and former "Community" writer/producer Dan Harmon (two pretty successful guys in their own right) hit the crowdfunding site looking for backe...

Carter Burwell's Score For Todd Haynes' 'Mildred Pierce' Gets An Official Release

Sure, we'll be happy to agree to disagree with people on most movies, but we honestly just can't vibe with folks who didn't dig Todd Haynes' "Mildred Pierce." It's the kind of story and filmmaking that just isn't being made at studios big or small. Haynes recently told IndieWire's Eric Kohn, "...not that material in 'Mildred' would be too racy or challenging for the indie film world, but just that it’s increasingly harder to find financing these days for serious dramas, domestic stories, female-driven narratives—everything we already know. The recent record profits of studio productions one would hope would have the effect of broadening, not ...

Academy Disqualifies Scores For 'Black Swan,' 'True Grit' and Others From Oscar Consideration

The trouble with the Academy awards, and indeed in putting too much stock in them, is that you're relying on the decisions being made by a relatively small, aging group of people. In many ways, things are improving -- Academy membership is getting younger, and it's starting to show: we can't imagine...

'True Grit' Score By Carter Burwell Hits Stores December 21st, Album Streaming Now

Is this the year -- ok, at the least the month -- of the arthouse film? It would certainly seem that way. Big glossy studio pictures like "The Tourist" (opening this weekend), the forthcoming "Tron: Legacy" and "How Do You Know" are arriving with tepid buzz while auteur driven work such as "Black Swan" and the Coens' "True Grit" are riding a huge wave of anticipation. And we are certainly looking forward to it. The film boats the usual pedigree of high talent in front of the camera -- Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Barry Pepper and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld -- and once again, the directors have assigned scoring duties to composer and ...
