Guest Post: Mihir Desai "Collaboration 2.0"

We are really in this together. As never before, we know no barriers. I met Mihar Desai virtually, over the internet, and have been impressed with his passion, innovative ways, commitment, and collaborative instincts. Possessed with such qualities, it is no surprise that he has come up with a simple solution to solve some problems.I am very interested how the issues of micro-budgeted filmmaking are being addressed around the world. We face a set of common problems. Solutions will come from all over. Adopting transparency and openness, a commitment to share, we will make better films. With his first guest post here, Mihar is stepping forward a...

Guest Post: Jason Brubaker "The Modern Movie Making Movement"

Times HAVE changed. In many, many ways. But what we call Indie Film is an era gone by. The opportunity to create and connect has never been greater -- and it means other changes are afoot. Jason Brubaker reached out to me with what I felt was an important idea, but like many I encounter, I was too busy to participate unfortunately.Jason recognizes that filmmakers no longer need "discriminatory distribution" and can reach audiences with their work in new and different ways. But Jason also recognizes we need to share the info on how we do it. Most importantly, he recognizes this is a community effort. He has done a great service to our co...

25+ Things I Want To Know From New Filmmakers

When I moderate a panel, I get to ask some questions that aren't the kind I often get to ask in a regular meeting. The questions are as much, and maybe perhaps more so, for the audience. Still though, I am generally trying to get at something: the how and why of creativity at this time in the world.I learned a lot from moderating the "New Faces Of Indie Film" panel at Lincoln Center on Saturday June 11, 2011. Yes, in the future when I am involved on a panel I will insist upon diversity, and yes, I will set a limit to the number of people on the panel. But I also learned from the answers folks gave. I didn't get to ask all of them, but ...

Guest Post: Jacques Thelemaque "Independent Film (Dis)Integration Part 2"

Perhaps you read today's earlier guest post from Jacques. But did you realize that The Filmmakers' Alliance fundraising campaign closes today?! I hadn't, so I hadn't given until this morning. Jacques explains below some of the great needs that are within our reach to solve: curation, aggregation,...

Guest Post: Gary Baddeley "Towards A Sustainable Independent Film Community"

Information needs to be shared. To fix this thing of ours, we have to speak up and out about what we want and how we operate. I was recently approached by an old friend, Gary Baddeley, about helping him do just that. Allow him to give you the details. Help him out, okay?

Your Second Chance: New Faces Of NYC Indie Film Video

We had a packed house at Lincoln Center for our "New Faces Of NYC Indie Film" panel. It was a good conversation. Sure, my game show idea did not work out, but hey, when you have eleven people up on the stage with you, it means you have eleven people not talking and that's hard to keep it lively. ...

Come Play At My Panel Today At 4P At Lincoln Center

I am moderating the "Some Of The New Faces Of NY Independent Film" panel today to help kick off Lincoln Center's new theaters. They are truly beautiful and will surely be a must-see destination for all Cinemaniacs throughout the universe. As I believe we will have eleven panelists on the stage wit...

Guest Post by Jennifer Fox: "Change Or Die: How 22 Years On One Film Lead To Desperate Measures

I have been producing for about 25 years now. I have routines, methods, and even rituals that help me get done what I have to get done. But if there is one thing that is constant in the film/media biz it is change. If we don't remain eternal students, we don't evolve and grow. Both our art and o...
