Eurimages - The Council of Europe - Roberto Olla Part II

Eurimages’ Roberto Olla was interviewed in a recent blog and it continues here. Eurimages is the Council of Europe fund for the co-production, distribution and exhibition of European cinematographic works for “greater Europe” which goes beyond the member nations of the European Union. Set up in 1988 as a Partial Agreement, it currently has 34 Member States. Eurimages aims to promote the European film industry by encouraging the production and distribution of films and fostering co-operation between professionals. Russia seems poised to enter and Jeremy Thomas is urging the U.K. to get on board as well.During this financial crisis, public fu...

Eurimages - The Council of Europe - Roberto Olla Part I

Roberto Olla, Executive Director, EurimagesIt has been stated that co-productions are driving world production these days, and I have been urging U.S. producers to look at the opportunities that international coproductions offer them. While it is not their salvation, nor is it the right path for all indie producers; it is creating a new and exciting vitality in world cinema. Given the major studios’ current investing in international productions and their film acquisitions to supply a pipeline for their off shore operations; given the German and French financial encouragement for English language coproductions, over the last couple of years...

U.S. Distributors are Popping Up Like Mushrooms - Documentary - Fisher Brothers & Snagfilms

You can't help but notice, every day a new U.S distributor announces itself by acquiring a film. It's dizzying. IndieWIRE has begun work on Meet the Distributors, a good way to start to see who the distributors are (see these after the jump), but what' missing is alittle clarification on just who ...

    Brands in the Fire

A Blog on BrandsBrands as we knew them as children were burnt on cattle. The word brand began simply as a way to tell one person's cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. A legally protected brand name is called a trademark. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity - it ...

    Europa Distribution

We have all have gone to discussions on distribution where the distributors despair in the face of high costs to advertise, difficulty in getting theatrical releases, no returns on social networking and other new internet initiatives. After attending one in San Sebastian hosted by European Film Promotion, we were notified that one of the supporters, Europa Distribution, might want to tell more people in the business about its mission. My discussion with the founder Adeline Monzier opens up possibilities for U.S. distributors even though they do not receive any government financial aid. Europa Distribution is the voice of independent distri...

Patrick Frater Reports on Korean Films in France

Maybe it's not kosher to take articles verbatim like this and my previous ScreenDaily reprint. But Patrick Frater, former journalist with Screen and Variety among other pubs, started his data-based online news Film Business Asia not too long ago and it is filling a much needed position covering Asia from both Eastern and Western povs. This article on how three great South Korean films, Poetry, The Housemaid and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Livesfared in their French theatrical release is unique. The stories are derived from the data collected by Patrick and his partner Stephen Cremin. As they describe it, Film Business Asia is a ...

    Current Press Releases from Abroad

Lots of interesting news is coming from offshore and so I am starting my own "wire service". When I get the news, I'll post a line and the link for those who are interested in following the links. This one I particularly like because I like the film so much and it came to U.S. via COLCOA where Overbrook made a remake deal with Danny Boon, the same director, for a the English language remake to be released 2013. Welcome to the Sticks, the French comedy about a postal civil servant in France being relocated to the North of France, to "the sticks" has been remade by the Italians as Benvenuti al sud (Welcome the The South) by Cattleya in whic...
