Olivia Thirlby Delivers A Brutal Headshot In New Pics From 'Dredd'; 'John Carter' Boots Up A Few New Images

Oh, Olivia Thirlby. So cute in "The Wackness" and "Juno," even when she's sporting a totally awful haircut in "Being Flynn," she still makes us feel...feelings. But she's dropping that cutesy image for "Dredd" and she's going straight up gangsta.

Writer Alex Garland & Director Pete Travis Say Everything Is Fine With 'Dredd'

Just a few days ago, the forthcoming reboot/new vision on "Dredd" became the subject of some ugly advance word. Reports surfaced that director Pete Travis was effectively being locked out of the editing bay, that reshoots were possibly in the works and most surprising of all, that writer Alex Garland ("Sunshine," "28 Days Later") was leading the charge behind the closed doors to get the film put together and was even going to see a co-director credit for his effort. The news was dispiriting for a film that promised fanboys an R-rated gritty take on the hero, but in a statement to 24 Frames released by Garland and Travis, they say everything i...

'Dredd' Director Pete Travis Locked Out Of Editing Room, Writer-Producer Alex Garland Takes Over

It's never good news to hear when a director gets locked out of the editing bay, particularly when it comes to a big budget tentpole movie. While rumors of Stephen Sommers battling executives over "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra" surfaced and were quickly scuttled, it didn't really matter because the movie made money and has spawned a sequel arriving next summer (though notably, without Sommers this time around). So whether or not this battle will have an effect on the movie creatively or otherwise, it does somewhat poison the well on perceptions of the film for the time being as fanboys will surely voice their concern (even if exact details...

'Dredd' Gets Locked & Loaded On September 21, 2012

Did we not just ask what the deal was with "Dredd"? As we previously mentioned, this comic book adaptation has been practically off everybody's radar for months, despite the occasional news blurb or a fuzzy photo. On Monday we got to see Karl Urban decked out in the Judge Dredd uniform, which looked...

New Look At Karl Urban In 'Dredd'

So, what's the deal with "Dredd"? The comic reboot has been flying way under the radar pretty much to the point of complete anonymity, which is a bit odd for a film that was tipped for release sometime this year (though with no release date set that's looking pretty unlikely). The film wrapped a ver...

Duncan Jones Admits He Was Intimidated By 'Superman' Scale; Backed Out Of Talks On His Own

'Moon' Director Also Talks Turning Down 'Dredd'What would you rather have: a filmmaker who's aware of his experience and limitations, but doesn't want to take a risk? Or a director who seizes an opportunity despite what might be a lack of skill-set self-awareness? Is the former just a move by a wise...

Confirmed: Lena Headey To Play Villain In 'Dredd'

In a year full of dubious-looking comic-book adaptations ("Thor," "Captain America," "X-Men: First Class" and, most of all, "Green Lantern"), there's one property that looks a little more promising: Lionsgate and DNA Films' "Dredd." An adaptation of the semi-fascist, "Dirty Harry"-inspired future co...

The Escapist & Potentially Entertaining Films Of 2011

Tentpoles That Hopefully Are Fun, Indies That May Or May Not Be Quality, Etc.You could see our annual three sets of anticipated film features like this: the Most Anticipated is an earnest example of the films we're truly looking forward to the most in that year, with a few caveats listed within if you read closely (i.e., we're looking forward to it, but the writing might be on the wall). Then our Escapist, Popcorn piece is more like: these are the fun, entertaining films of the year that may or may not be good. For us and our taste, it's always a bit of a toss up and history shows that we're generally on the money in terms of how we'll feel a...

First Look At Karl Urban In 'Dredd'

Geeks will have an early chance to critique the first image from the forthcoming Pete Travis-directed comic adaptation "Dredd," starring Karl Urban. The unfortunately named Jock, a comic artist, has provided a scene from rehearsals that is now making the Internet rounds.
