The Amazing Race: Which Awards Contenders Came Out Of The Venice/Telluride/Toronto Derby On Top?

After two bonkers weeks, the September festival season is just about dragging to a close (at least in terms of major awards-season debuts; Fantastic Fest is pretty much imminent, but it's not an awards player and the NYFF follows hot on its heels, but most of those films have screened already). And ...

Watch: 3 Clips From 'Ides Of March' Highlight Political Intrigue

Of all the movies making a play for the awards season this fall, George Clooney's "Ides Of March" is getting into the mix early. Already running the Venice/Telluride/TIFF gauntlet and hitting theaters next month, it will be first out of the gate and it will be interesting to see if audiences respond to a political drama even with the dynamite pairing of Clooney/Gosling. Venice '11 Review: 'The Ides Of March' Is A Gripping Return To Form For Director George Clooney

Even more so than usual, 2012 should be a particularly fascinating election year. On the one hand, you've got the incumbent, President Barack Obama, a man elected on the promise of hope and conciliation, and a man who's failed to live up to the sky-high expectations placed on him. On the other, you have a band of Republican candidates who have, so far, failed to look anything like contenders, instead seemingly competing in a national crazy-off. We're a long, long way off from finding out the victor, but to get things underway, one of the most politically engaged actor-directors around has opened the Venice Film Festival with a look behind the...
