    Global Girls Go Sundance

The beloved Global Girls are at Sundance running around interviewing and plying their powers as "minority women" journalists and media pros...both of these teenage girls were trained during the World Cup, Lungile Buhale in Soweto (yes, she flew all the way to Utah on the plane for the first time and will be spending 6 more days in L.A.) and Jessica Cueva from East LA and a student at Santa Monica Community College. They have interviewed Robert Redford, Danny Glover (about his Black Power Mixtapes), Gloria Steinem, Jennifer Newsome (Miss Representation). Geena Davis, Tiffany Schlain (about Connected and Yelp), the producer of Project Nim and a...

Miss Representation and Levi Strauss Go Forth in Sundance

What is most notable as a trend in the films of Sundance is corporate patronage and investment as well as product placement enabling the 7th Art to go forward. From Morgan Spurlock's outright The Greatest Movie Ever Sold which examines the world of product placement, marketing, and advertising by making a film financed entirely by product placement, marketing, and advertising to Miss Representation directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom is showing in U.S. Documentary Competition screened today for the first time. The support it has received from Levis Strauss, whose Shape What's To Come is admirable in that it is built on a large idea for The Mi...

James Franco said he'll likely take his next film as director The Broken Tower to Cannes. James Franco’s directorial debut was Fool’s Gold in 2005. Sundance By Numbers #2

    >5 juries for competition films collectively are comprised of individuals from the global arts community, each of whom brings unique perspective and range of experience. Jury Members are Susanne Bier ♀, Matt Groening, Jason Reitman, America Ferrara ♀, Kim Peirce ♀.With my view of the film world business, more interesting than the Winners of the Competition for Narrative and Docs for the American Indies and the World Cinema Sections (The films themselves are all worth seeing by virtue of having been selected by Sundance) is the competition among Hollywood's agencies and producer reps in handling the sales of the films. This is akin to a hors...

Margin Call Closed Out to Trade

Margin Call -- which was exec produced by Cassian Elwes who is repping with UTA for the U.S. -- screened for press and industry today and was the scene of a small though intensely angst-ridden uproar as industryites were shut out after waiting on line for an hour. Some in the closed-out crowd claimed attendees were specially selected to enter in order to make the U.S. sale especially hot. Those unable to see the film included press members scheduled to interview talents in the film and many of the smaller distributors. To name a few I saw lingering outside, trying to decide what to do next, since attending the next few films was now out of ...

    We Were Here at Sundance

An Interview with David WeissmanSundance official 'Meet the Fillmmaker' WE WERE HERE is a powerful new documentary that takes a deep and reflective look back at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco in 1981 and at a community that came together to respond to the crisis with love, compassion, and determination. Oscar® Watch: Even the Rain (From Spain): Revised January 19th: I'm Rooting For This Underdog

See the trailer here. Today January 19, as the Shortlist for Best Foreign Language Submissions for Nomination is announced, I find myself rooting for Tambien la Lluvia for its brave subject matter and ambitious storytelling. But I must admit that the reason I am not rooting for for Denis Villeneuve’s “Incendies, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Biutiful", Susanne Bier’s Golden Globe winner “In a Better World, and Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Dogtooth,” is because I have not seen them! I've heard great things about them though. Nor have I seen Algeria's “Hors la Loi” (“Outside the Law”), Rachid Bouchareb, director; Japan's “Confessions,” Tetsuya Nakas...
