    Africa in Film: White Wedding

There are not many films released in the U.S. from Africa and White Wedding is a delicious romp around South Africa, a road trip from Johannesburg to Durban, a mix and match of races and nationalities. Jann Turner ♀, a white female director whose anti-apartheid father was killed in front of her, makes movies with her black partners that capture the humor and pain of today's South Africa. The Little Film Company, who brought the world the 2005 Academy Award winning Best Foreign Language film Tsotsi, is going to release the DVD/ VoD version on January 25 through Image Entertainment. Robbie Little and I have had long discussions about digital m...

Navajo Nation and a New Sort of Giving - DVD Distribution

Making a difference in society calls for more tools than you can find in a documentary film. It calls for vision and creative activism involving marketing, educating and partnering with real people from different walks of life. That's how to build a groundswell.I am not going to start a series here on DVD distribution benefitting the worthy causes of the subjects of films, but coming on the heels of The Creative Coalition's endeavors, this distributor to the non-theatrical community came my way, and in the interest of a good cause, I am posting it here on the heels of Poliwood and TCC. Both these postings are good case studies for others and...

    Binger Institut and Thomas Mai

Binger Filmlab is an Amsterdam based international feature film and documentary development center where talented writers, directors, producers and script editors from around the world can place both their projects and their usual working practices within an inspiring environment of fellow filmmakers, to be coached and supported by internationally acclaimed mentors and advisors. When it began in 1996, my partner, Peter Belsito and I would coach there, especially concentrating on the art of the pitch. While it has been many years since we've attended, it always retains a special place in our "cosmos" and we are happy to see how far it has pr...

Under new leadership, Joana Vicente has revitalized the Independent Film Market and we are so excited to track the films which show in No Borders (at last we have an event comparable to Rotterdam Cinemart, Pusan PPP and Hong Kong HAF) again. In fact, she has pulled out all stops and this is the cul...

Meet the Mogul at Toronto FF

I was honored to be asked to conduct the one-on-one interview with Bob Berney in the Meet the Mogul session in the new Filmmaker's Lounge. We had a great audience and it was so informative to hear Bob explain how he sees films, the importance of their audiences which for his films have often been u...

Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival

LALIFF kicked off its 5 day festival last night with a great audience pleaser, Venezuelan film by first time director (and writer), Marcel Rasquin, HERMANO, audience and jury prize winner from Moscow FF and rumored to be headed toward Telluride. The international sales agent EuropaCorp (whose Luc Besson was president of the Moscow jury when the film won Moscow International Film Festival's top prize, the Golden George), was uncertain that it wanted the film to show in this festival where it had been promised before EuropaCorp was in the picture. But the filmmaker must have prevailed and a packed house at Mann's Grauman Chinese was lucky to ...
