Heroines of Cinema: The British Actress’s Guide to Hollywood

Looking at the program for the London Film Festival, which launches this Thursday, it struck me how many of the gala films featured star turns from leading British actresses. There’s Carey Mulligan in “Inside Llewyn Davis”, Emma Thompson in “Saving Mr Banks”, Kate Winslet in “Labor Day”, Judi Dench ...

Exclusive: First Official Image From 'Suite Francaise' Starring Michelle Williams & Matthias Schoenaerts

Is it a bit ridiculous to already be pining for next year's festival season? Alright, it totally is ridiculous but we're probably not alone in being stoked for "Suite Francaise," if only because it brings together Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts for a wartime romance. And with lensing tak...

Cannes Review: 'Only God Forgives' Stretches Refn's Neon-Noir Style Over Too Little Oedipal, Amoral Substance

With the weight of expectation behind it, Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Only God Forgives” was never going to be able to deliver the same neon blue jolt of surprise that thrilled through the 2011 Cannes crowd at the first screening of “Drive.” But the audience in attendance today was prepped and primed, a...

CBS Films In Talks To Buy TIFF Hit 'Salmon Fishing In The Yemen' With Ewan McGregor & Emily Blunt

It's been a fairly quiet market for big film deals at Toronto so far, with the sole major sale -- that of "Shame" to Fox Searchlight -- having been in the works since Venice, and even then, the film reportedly only sold for a six-figure sum, the film's backers placing great importance on being able...

Luke Evans & Kristin Scott Thomas Join Nicolas Winding Refn's 'Only God Forgives'

Just a little bit of a history lesson before we begin: Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn had originally planned to shoot "Only God Forgives" before a little project called "Drive" with Ryan Gosling fell into his lap. And while he went off to shoot the upcoming Cannes-competing flick, "Only God Forgives" stayed on his radar, and last summer he said that not only did he still plan to make it, he would starting lensing once he was finished up with "Drive." More recently, composer Cliff Martinez -- who has scored "Drive" -- told us in an extensive interview that while he's tentatively talked to Refn about "Logan's Run," the director was planning...

Brendan Fraser & Kristin Scott Thomas Join Neil LaBute's 'Seconds Of Pleasure'

Colin Firth & Ed Harris Offered RolesWhat the hell happened to Neil LaBute? Once considered a bold new emerging cinematic voice after delivering two caustic, blistering and hilarious films "In The Company Of Men" and "Your Friends & Neighbors" the director unwisely started taking on projects not based on his own writing. This led to the films like "Nurse Betty" and "Posession" and though he rebounded with the underrated "The Shape Of Things," matters got considerably worse with a trifecta of awful including "The Wicker Man" (man gets attacked by bees), "Lakeview Terrace" (man gets attacked by Samuel L. Jackson) and "Death At A Funeral" (man g...
