Weekend Box Office: Audiences Stay Home In Droves As 'The Help' Defeats Weak New Releases

Credit a canny expansion strategy that nabbed “The Help” the number one spot at the box office in its second weekend of release. Disney wisely banked on the film having more buzz than the slate of underwhelming new releases (not all of it positive), and after two weekends, it’s easily one of the season’s big success stories, as the picture has crested $70 million after only twelve days of release. The establishment has been encouraged - stories of the struggles of minorities highlighted by the heroism of a plucky white person of higher social strata are surefire earners, particularly if you market to families. Institutionalized racism at its ...

    One Day—movie review

Sometimes, a successful play or a popular book—even a comic book—has qualities that just don’t transfer to the screen. One Day is based on a best-selling novel, and the producers hired its author, David Nicholls, to write the screenplay, since he’s had plenty of exper...

Anne Hathaway Explains How Bon Iver & Dirty Projectors Helped Her Land The Lead In 'One Day'

The Influence Of 'Once Upon A Time In America' & More From Lone Scherfig & Jim Sturgess About The FilmThere’s the average romantic comedy with the meet cute or initial hatred between the inevitable lovers, and then there’s “One Day.” Rather than featuring a traditional love story narrative, set over days, weeks, or even months, “One Day” visits Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) on July 15 every year, starting in the ‘80s. The audience gets a glimpse of where they are--and where they are in relation to each other--each year on that day, creating 23 mini-films in one. They’re friends who are constantly bordering on being much more,...

Jim Sturgess Says The Book Was All He Needed To Get Prepared For 'One Day'

In “One Day,” Jim Sturgess’ Dexter is kind of an asshole, though certainly the kind of asshole that some women are irresistibly and illogically drawn to. He says and does things to Anne Hathaway’s Emma that would make him irredeemable if played by a less charming actor, but because it’s Sturgess who’s doing the heartbreaking, we’re content to watch--and would likely volunteer to be the victim as well. Based on David Nicholls’ book (and the author’s screenplay), the Lone Scherfig film follows the pair dipping into each others' lives for one day a year across three decades. They perform a dance where they’re alternately joining together and pus...

Review: 'One Day' Essentially An Overwrought Nicholas Sparks Movie With Dodgy English Accents

Treacly, oftentimes predictable, lacking real chemistry and sporting a narrative conceit that never really serves the movie well, if you thought the only thing missing from movies based on Nicholas Sparks novels was questionably convincing English accents, “One Day” may be the movie for you. While t...

'One Day' Soundtrack Features Elvis Costello, Tricky, Fatboy Slim, Primal Scream, James & More

Yes, this is a decades spanning love story set in Britain, so we're not surprised the forthcoming soundtrack to Lone Scherfig's "One Day" reflects that, but man, we definitely had a time warp/flashback when we saw James was on this thing. It has been a long time since we heard those guys.

Watch: New Trailer For 'One Day' Reveals Jim Sturgess Is Kind Of A Jerk

Oh, romance. Sometimes you end up chasing your true love for decades even if he's kind of a rakish cad and insensitive jerk which seems to be the message in this new trailer for "One Day."

Watch: New U.K. Trailer For 'One Day' A Slight Improvement

Lone Scherfig's followup to her acclaimed "An Education" is not lacking in talent. Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and based on the best-selling novel by David Nicholls, our expectations that were once running were somewhat dashed when the first trailer for the film dropped last month.

Elvis Costello Pens New Song "Sparkling Day" For Anne Hathaway Romance 'One Day'

Entering on the fringes of punk and new wave scene, mining seemingly the entirety of pop history for his diverse array of work, and now settling into a late stage persona of a rocker that even your grandma could love, Elvis Costello has seemingly done it all. But the music legend continues to surpri...
