Weekend Box Office: 'Puss In Boots' Purrs To No. 1 As Wintery Weekend Affects Bottom Line Totals

Opening up on 3,952 screens DreamWorks Animation’s 3D "Puss In Boots," a spin-off of the popular and lucrative "Shrek" series, was always going to do well. Even critics were on board this time (an 81% RT score), including our own positive Playlist review. However, competing with Halloween and Hallow...

Weekend Box Office: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Collects All-Time Biggest Horror Opening

Clearly, there are some bonafide ad wizards over at Paramount after this weekend’s $54 million performance by “Paranormal Activity 3.” While the franchise appears to have its share of detractors, with some growing tired of the “found footage” subgenre, this picture carried surprisingly-generous crit...

In Theaters: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Hopes To Scare Off 'The Three Musketeers' This Weekend

It’s almost Halloween, which means it’s time for terrible horror movies to rule at the box office. I’m surprised there aren’t more this year, but we do have the "Paranormal Activity" franchise taking the Halloween crown from “Saw,” which I think we’ve seen the last of for a good while, at least. Sev...

Fantastic Fest Review: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Runs Low On Ideas, But Delivers Plenty Of Scares

As a person terrified by the prospect of encountering a shadowy figure in my apartment in the middle of the night, the “Paranormal Activity” movies work like gangbusters on this writer. On an intellectual level, It's genuinely admirable how effectively they’re able to wring significant suspense out of so little happening on screen, but in terms of visceral impact, they’re among the few horror films whose effect on this viewer lingered long after leaving the theater. “Paranormal Activity 3” is less effective than its predecessors, but it still works when and how it needs to. As a prequel to a prequel that further explored the supernatural worl...

'Paranormal Activity 3' Trailer Hits, Global Anthropological Experiment With Film Masochists Begins

Just when you thought "The Blair Witch Project 5: It's Witchin' Time!" nailed the coffin shut in the accidentally successful, cheapo-scare found/footage genre, the fucking godawful "Paranormal Activity" films had to light that shit afire again. Why? Because the Oren Peli-directed film cost (and looks like it cost) about $50 to make and grossed $193 million worldwide thanks to chowder-headed audiences with nothing better to do with their time. You do the math on that awesome profit margin. These films are essentially made for a nickel and pay for themselves about 15 times over -- "Paranormal Activity 2" grossed $177 million. Essentially, the s...

Watch: Some Staticky Clips From 'Paranormal Activity 3'

So, here we go again. The "saga" of "Paranormal Activity" continues next month with the third installment in the found footage franchise that is pretty much "America's Funniest Home Videos" with the volume jacked and invisible hands moving shit around.

Post-Fall Film Festival Season: Five Movies We're Still Eagerly Awaiting

And Five We're Worried About/DreadingWith the Toronto International Film Festival now over, the dust is beginning to settle on 2011 and we're moving into the final stage of the fall movie season. Many, if not most, of autumn's Oscar season big hitters have now been revealed, leaving principally commercial fare, and a few prestige-y films that are rushing towards completion. As ever, the benefits of opening your Christmas presents early is a mixed bag; it means that we're able to firmly recommend some big fall films, movies like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "Shame" and "We Need To Talk About Kevin." It means we can also tell you to be wary of ...

Watch: Bloody Mary! It's The Trailer For 'Paranormal Activity 3'

$193 million and $176 million worldwide. Those are box office hauls of "Paranormal Activity" and "Paranormal Activity 2," and those are the two primary reasons that "Paranormal Activity 3" is on the way and by the looks of the first trailer, the filmmakers are taking a "if -it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-...

'Catfish' Directors Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman To Helm 'Paranormal Activity 3'

After cravenly exploiting the misery and loneliness of someone who needed therapy in private and not on 500 screens nationwide, Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost established themselves not as filmmakers but as crass, dishonest provocateurs. So is it a surprise that the "Catfish" directors would make a ...

The Inevitable 'Paranormal Activity 3' Will Hit Theaters On October 21, 2011

With "Saw" presumably torturing its last victim this past Halloween, it looks like a new horror franchise is set to take over in delivering yearly scares with increasingly diminished returns.
