Kevin Smith & The Westboro Church Protest Of "Red State" In Photos

I only have a second, but here's a bunch of photos from the Westboro Baptist Church's protest of Kevin Smith's "Red State" and Smith's own counter-protest (the counter-protest probably had 100+ participants, Westboro had 6). I have to say seeing the fierce and evil insanity that is Shirley Phelps i...

    "Terri" Q&A With Azazel Jacobs

Poignant, unexpected and quietly profound, Azazel Jacobs's "Terri" premiered in Sundance last night and marked a significant aesthetic evolution for the director, who was previously at Sundance with "Momma's Man." Following its titular character - an overweight teenager played by remarkable newcomer Jacob Wysocki - the film is considerably more conventional than Jacobs's previous work. As Terri struggles at home (his primary caregiver is a pill-popping uncle) and at school (kids taunt him with names like "double d"), his life takes a turn when assistant principal Mr. Fitzgerald (John C. Reilly, great as always) decides to take him on. Thou...

"Like Crazy" Q&A With Drake Doremus, Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones and Charlie Bewley

A solid indie love story, Drake Doremus's "Like Crazy" was very well received at its Eccles premiere this afternoon. The film follows "Douchebag" as Doremus's second film a row to screen in competition at the festival.

"The Future" Q&A With Miranda July

"I couldn't think of a more perfect film to start the 'Premieres' section of the festival," John Cooper said on stage at the Eccles last night before the premiere of Miranda July's "The Future." "I love it when filmmakers return to Sundance. I've been waiting for this film for a long time. I didn't ...

"The Ledge" Q &A With Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson and Terrance Howard

The directorial debut of Matthew Chapman, U.S. Dramatic Competition title "The Ledge" disappointed when it debuted last night at the Eccles Center in Park City. Opening with a man (Charlie Hunnam) perched on a high-rise ledge, and then going back to depict the complex set of events that lead up to it, the twisty drama features an impressive cast in Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard. And while the four offered decent performances (particularly Wilson), none of them could rise above a problematic and clunky script that overextends itself in trying to take on very big issues surrounding faith and religion, and their relations...

Phelps: "God hates fag enabling perverts at the Sundance Film Festival."

The ridiculous crazies at the Westboro Baptist Church are heading Sundance way! With one of their nice little quotes seen in the title of this entry sure to be eagerly chanted, the Kansas "church" is planning two demonstrations during the festival: One at 2:45pm on Sunday, and another at 6pm the sa...

    Welcome To Sundance, 2011

After a nostalgic 24 hours of severe pre-Sundance hustle here in Park City (grocery runs, schedule making, e-mailing returning, not being sold alcohol at the Utah State Liquor Store because you don't have American ID), things have calmed down ever-so-briefly to allow for a brief rant here. This will be my fourth Sundance, and so far I'm liking the vibe that comes with that number. After a first festival that essentially can never be topped simply out of how shiny and exciting everything was with fresh eyes, my second and third festivals brought on a bit of jadedness where I wondered whether everything peaks the first time around. But now, I...

10 Sundance Films I'm Excited About Based Solely On Their Titles, Casts, Directors or Synopses

The past 72 hours has seen a ridiculous amount of news come indieWIRE's way - notably the Sundance lineup, the Spirit Award nominations, and the National Board of Review winners... I've had very little time to wrap my head around it all, particularly the overwhelming Sundance lineup, which came in through two massive announcements today and yesterday. I have, however, become very familiar with the very basic elements of Sundance's lineup - through endlessly ensuring the titles, directors, casts and synopses all now up on indieWIRE.com would be ready to go when the embargo was lifted... So based on this knowledge base, here's 10 films that cau...
